Every once in a while, I look at my giant pile of unplayed games and ask myself if I shouldn't cancel my Humble Choice subscription in the name of frugality. Then I remind myself that game miser is not a healthy aspiration. I must not simply slavishly add keys, but instead should go looking through the lists and install something that catches my fancy.

Thus, in an excavation of my own barrow of games, did I stumble on this fine example of video game as art. For the past two nights, once the little ones are asleep, I have had the joy of returning to my deep gaming roots to point and click my way through a virtual world presented in pixels of yesteryear size.

We live in a time of great plenty, when, for less than the cost of a bad burger, can story can sit unopened on a virtual shelf, patient and waiting. Virtuosity is bundled with the prosaic, you just have to dig a bit. Here is a delightful bit of prose married to art that may not be high definition, but that is compelling.

Aren't we all robots? Ghosts in the shell, so the media about them is about us? You manage your robot needs in-game by spending dice as action points to gain resources, accomplished by brief vignettes describing the action you have chosen and its result. good or bad. Higher the value of the die you spent, better the chance of a favorable outcome. After you spend your dice for the day you sleep and next cycle get a refreshed set of dice. Here is the rub: as an escaped robot slave, your erstwhile masters and creators programmed a slow death into you, forestalled only by a proprietary blend of anti-die juice administered by those to whom you belong. So, mechanically, if you don't find more joy juice you start to break down and get less action point die to spend per cycle. What a poetic spot of mechanics as lore. There is a lot of poetry in this game, even if not many stanzas. I played it on Father's Day and enjoyed it greatly. My dice are getting fewer in number these days, if I am honest with myself. Wish I had photosynthetic skin, like one of the upgrades you can earn. No twitch here, just quandaries and storytelling. Melancholy and pretty. I'm glad I played.

Well, with Russia playing Nilfgaard to Ukraine's Lyria some of the themes are a bit more disturbing than they were at the game's release. I love me some Qwent, so throw in a CDPR narrative and I am an easy sell.

If only Ridge Racer on the OG Playstation had online leaderboards. I could have been a contender. But now I am old and have children and am very low down on the online leaderboards this game does have. But I still have managed to clock in over a hundred hours on this racing masterpiece, and I don't even think I accidently let it run overnight like many of my higher hour games. MMO progression mechanics grafted onto an arcade racing skeleton. Multiple fronts to advance on. Something for everyone, well, except those who don't like video games, I guess. Recommended.

I recently found out through genetic testing that 1% of my heritage is from Norway. So...I AM A VIKING. HAIL THE ONE EYED ALLFATHER. This game allows me to celebrate my (sadly probably pretty rapey) ancestor's heritage by spending hours making the perfect fort and then defending it from trolls.

I've enjoyed myself immensely . Minecraft never took for me and I find most procedurally generated content soulless, an opinion I have held ever since suffering through the dungeons of Dark Cloud a, uh, long time ago. But here meaning is derived from community. I have played exclusively on a dedicated server with a few friends and the shared world that we shape has stamped meaning onto the meaningless.

I've played for what amounts to a full work week as a father of a 2 year old and an under 1 year old. While holding down a job. That equals a thumbs up from me.

A bullet hell in hell. The gameplay loop is burnished gold. You would be proud to put it on your love's finger.

I am only a little into the game, but am fully immersed.

I must be a dwarf at heart, for I covet secret things. Gems and metals hidden in the ground. In the rock and stone. I will free them, and they will be mine.

About midway through I think right now. Atmospheric. Unsettling. Enjoyable.
