This game. Yes, this game.

The Half-Life series in general has one of the best storylines of any games I've played. HL2 is enjoyable without having played HL1, though HL1 is also an amazing game too, and if you don't mind outdated graphics and want the full experience, play the first one. Also, you should probably read my HL1 review as it's also based on the HL series in general.

Anyways...

If you're one of those people that doesn't like FPS's and generally thinks that all they are about is blood and gore, no general gameplay or anything, then Half-Life may change your mind about that. Games like Call of Duty are bad examples of that, unfortunately they are also the most common examples.

Half-Life, in my opinion, is enjoyable even if you don't particularly like FPS's. It has amazing gameplay and story, and I showed it to my friend Pokaymon and he played through the entirety of Half-Life: Source (hl1 but directly ported to the Source engine) and loved it, even though he didn't like FPS's that much.
If you don't walk into it thinking about it in a biased way and expecting no gameplay or story, then you might not enjoy it. If you be openminded about it, then you may enjoy it a lot and become attached to the amazing characters and storyline.

Half-Life 2 expands on the story and characters introduced in the first game by making them actual characters and not player models with filenames. All jokes aside, Half-Life 2 takes place 20 years after the end of the first Half-Life and the initial events of the Black Mesa resonance cascade and the portal storms. The Combine, who had invaded the Vortigaunt homeworld before they fled to the borderworld Xen, set their sights on Earth after witnessing the heroic actions of Doctor Gordon Freeman who saved Planet Earth from the Nihilanth and the other aliens from Xen. A war took place between Earth's military and the Combine forces that lasted a total of seven hours, giving it the name the 7-hour war. Doctor Eli Vance and his daughter Alyx started to live in their own secret lab called Black Mesa East with Doctor Judith Mossman, a completely new character not form Black Mesa. Doctor Kleiner also has his own lab, and together they are forming the Resistance, a group bearing the Greek letter Lambda, which means not only the letter L, but the scientific term Half-life, which is why it is in the logo for the game series.
The Vortigaunts, after being freed from the Nihilanth, now have joined forces with the Resistance, and when the G-Man awakens Gordon from stasis 20 years since the events of the Black Mesa incident, he learns about the Combine's enslavement of Earth and Administrator Dr. Wallace Breen working with them in the "safe" City 17. Gordon Freeman, the "one free man," quickly becomes the face of the Resistance as they begin to attempt to stop the Combine.

Gameplay is mostly smilar to the first game, although there is much more variety in scenery, as well as the first known implementation of Havok physics in Valve's Source engine, allowing new forms of gameplay.

I recommend this game to a lot of people, and if you've played the Portal series, it might interest you to know that Half-Life takes place in the same universe. In fact, Portal was originally a sidegame to the Half-Life series, but then it became very popular so they released Portal 2 with more storyline and turning it into its own parallel series.

I rate this game 10 out of 10. kbai

Truly amazing. I wrote a review of the Demo and the original mod before the full game came out awhile back and never got around to writing a review for this one, but I can say that this was well worth the $15. For those who played the original, know that it is not just an HD remix of the original Source mod. It also adds plenty of new endings, as well as new secrets. The original made it quite obvious to the player the choices available and the amount of endings that could be had, but now they've changed plenty of things around to add more secrets, endings, and oh, the replayability!

Now, every time you finish the game, the game will begin again and sometimes after certain endings certain things will change, and it has some hilarious achievements, such as playing the game for the entire duration of a Tuesday, or not playing for five years, or the "Unacheivable" acheivement (which is apparently somehow acheivable but I'm not sure how to legitly yet).

I definitely recommend this game to EVERYONE.

PS: Don't look up any videos or any information about it. It's best experienced first-hand; there's a reason the Store page tells you nothing about the game. If you aren't prepared to throw your money around without knowing about it, play the Demo. Actually—either way, play the demo first. It has exclusive content from the actual game and is hilarious in its own right–it's the best Demo ever, such a good Demo that I wrote a review of the demo.... yeah.

If that's not enough for you, you can play the original mod if you want. It's on Desura and IndieDB for free–you don't need Half-Life 2, just the Source SDK Base 2007 will do it.

SUBJECT: Half-Life
STATUS: Amazing

AWAITING FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS

All jokes aside, this game (and the entire franchise) is amazing, and is one of my favorite FPSes. There isn't much of a focus on the multiplayer, but the singleplayer campaign/story mode is great. You play as a theoretical physicist named Dr. Gordon Freeman, a badass nerd who loves kickin' ass and bashing crates. But he's all out of crates. He works at Black Mesa, a facility-science-company-thing where people do stuff. A lot of the work is with the military, so because of that they build devices such as turrets, weapons, etc. However, they also have a large focus on science and physics, and they are big competitors with Aperture Science (from Portal). Anyways, one day ♥♥♥♥ goes down and Freeman is right smack in the middle of it.

The Half-Life series as a whole is a great FPS experience. A lot of it involves taking advantage of your environments against your enemies. There's also a lot involving physics, especially in the second game with the Source engine.

Speaking of the Source engine, there's also another version of this game which runs on Source. It's mostly just a direct port, but if you play Garry's Mod, it's nice to have it so you can use it's resources in-game. However, this version (the original) has support for standalone mods, which HL:S doesn't.

If you're considering getting into the Half-Life series, the second game stands well on it's on without having to have played the first game to understand, but the original is still a great game and fun to play, so I highly recommend it. If you plan on getting this and aren't sure which one to get, then I recommend the Source version simply because it looks a little nicer and is a little more up to date, as long as you understand you can't get mods for it.

As for the multiplayer, well, the series doesn't have much of a focus on that, and since this runs on the GoldSrc engine (heavily modified version of the Quake engine), the multiplayer feels and plays very similar to Quake multiplayer, in terms of pace and gameplay. If you're mainly interested in the multiplayer, I recommend getting Quake III Arena, a multiplayer-only version of Quake which is pretty cool.

Also, if you're not a fan of FPS's and are very skeptical about this game, I'd like to go ahead and say that this game is amazing even if you're not that big of a fan of modern first-person shooters. I recommended this game to my friend Pokaymon, who played a lot of Portal, and even though he didn't have much interest in FPS's, he grew to like and enjoy this game. Speaking of Portal, this game takes place in the same universe as it. Portal initially started as a side-game to Half-Life when it launched with the Orange Box, but then it gained a lot of popularity so they made a sequel.

All in all:

If you aren't a fan of FPS's, I recommend trying this game or HL:S anyways if you're feeling open-minded.

If you're a fan of FPS's and are okay with a singleplayer experience with a lesser focus in multiplayer, I also recommend trying this game.

If you're a fan of multiplayer FPS's and don't care for singleplayer campaign, I recommend Quake III Arena or Half-Life Deathmatch: Source.

In general....

I rate this game 10 bouncing Gmen out of 10.
