TLDR: If you like AC Black Flag and want something like the naval portion, I massively recommend this game, even above Sea of Thieves.

I wishlisted this game after playing the demo back in April 2021. I loved the demo so much, I never deleted it after installing (even though the developer turned off access to it). It was frustrating for me to wait all this time with no release date yet here it is now.

For years I have been wanting a game that gave me more of what we had in the naval combat of Assassins Creed 4. I loved that part of the game immensely, but owing to Ubisoft's reputation with sexual scandals, I have been trying hard not to spend money on them. This game definitely scratches that itch.

I have even bought Sea of Thieves hoping it would be like the naval portion of Black Flag, but I found the way that ships are handled to be tedious in Sea of Thieves, especially if you are a single player. The user experience in this game of sailing the ship is closer to Black Flag (a good thing).

My only gripe with this game is that it isn't open world like Black Flag or Sea of Thieves are, instead, you move from area to area. I am forgiving of this as it is a small indie developer.

EDIT: You can now sail between zones

Has connection issues, hackers.

But still so so worth it at full price. Very easy to find a game. You can easily make friends since there is a lot of interaction during the discussion phases. Super simple concept that is extremely fun. Can eat up time without you even noticing.

I recommend this game extremely highly. Even at $30 AUD. I have way more hours than Steam shows because I had it from HumbleBundle.

Anyone who downvotes this game must be a Mac user

I like the sense of humour in this game. It encourages you to play intelligently.

Previous review: I hope they keep improving this, lord knows there is much scope for it. Still, in its present state i can say it is worth your while for the price if you can look past the polish to enjoy the slicing mechanics.

Current review: DO NOT BUY. I reported a bug where the kill doesn't register whenever I finish off one of the bosses and I keep having to restart at the end of that encounter. There has been NO reply on the forums and NO updates to fix the bug. Looks like they did a runner. I do not recommend you buy this game if the devs never post another update.

Not a fun game to play if you are alone, even on the lowest difficulty.

Nothing will ever beat DMC3 for me but this game is enough to my liking that I would recommend it. Probably not worth buying the DLCs (unless your really want them) but the game itself is absolutely solid.

I play with the style switcher mod from Serpentium (search DDMK 0.998 in reddit) for DMC3 and I love this game so much. I played DMC4 once and DMC3 with style and weapon switcher is everything DMC4 was supposed to be and more. I got it on sale and I think I won't be spending much time on other games for quite a while.

I haven't played much of the original game. I think the graphics are mostly the same, I am not sure. Anyway, thiis game seems to be working fine for me. There has been a couple of times where the program fails to close, a crash once or twice. Not perfect but tolerably playable.

TLDR
I am an Australian gamer and I was worried that we wouldn't have dismemberment in our version, hence I really wanted to get to the 2nd level within Steams 2 hour window, and yes, I did have dismemberment in my game, so I am very happy with my purchase and shall not refund this game. Negatives are the display of XBOX buttons instead of PC controls. Also camera doesn't automatically follow enemies unless you are locked on, but I think you can change those settings.

Long form
This game came to my attention a few months ago when I was playing through Metal Gear Solid Rising and I was very impressed with that games cutting mechanic. The way you could cut a part of an enemy off and that changed how they fought reminded me of Ninja Gaiden 2 on the XBOX360. I ragequit NG2 because I was 13, but looking back it had a really refined dismemberment mechanic where if you had certain weapons and had purchased the correct combos for them, you would have moves that would cut an enemys leg off,, or a head. I thought back on these games and searched if NG2 was coming to the PC ever 9 in it's original 360 version).

This game is from the devs of NG2 and their influence is felt in a good way. It takes out the agility of Ryu (like running up walls or vaulting off an enemy's head), dials down the supernatural stuff a lot, but gives you all sorts of limitations on how you attack or dodge, which is good because your enemies have those limitations too. The weapons provided also are differentiated from each other so that you will think tactically about reach and attack speed when you face different foes.

What other reviewers say about the story being so so or the environments being repetitive may be true, but I don't think that's the focus of this game, its clearly not what the devs have focused their efforts on. You will like this game if you like the experience of the combat system. I feel it is a particularly worthwhile game at USD$30, but you could probably reach the second level before where all the tutorial stuff is done before the 2 hours are up, so don't be afraid to try it out even at full price.
