Make more content

Crashy when you're tweaking settings but runs great once you hit new game. Very pretty demo of the new D3D9 runtime.

I expected more after this many years :/

Almost all of the content is available in Slime Rancher 1, and that game has way more content in general. Bigger maps, more slimes, more upgrades, more deployables, minigames, automations.

The first game's maps were also more interesting. I never got lost or turned around, but in this game it happens constantly. Within the same region, everything looks the same. Every clearing has the same slimes and one of the same few formulaic geometries. Running through the map back to base is a bore, and pretty difficult to do without opening the map even if you've done it several times.

This game is also significantly more grindy than the first one. In this game I find myself just waiting 6 hours, harvesting, feeding, selling, like 5 times in a row so that I can buy the next thing. In the old one I never had that problem because there was so much content that there was always something new to do.

Considering where the previous game was, this is not impressive. It feels lazy. A new coat of paint on old assets and uninteresting map designs. Considering all the content that's been removed, it feels like a major step backwards.

Once you get past the fantastically good art direction, it's a mediocre game that falls on its face in a lot of key ways. Your tech trees are maxed by the time you're halfway through the game. The vanishingly small amount of content tapers off before any narrative payoff and you're left grinding forward with some of the most uninspired combat I've seen in a roguelike.

The game doesn't seem to know what it's selling point is. Whether you want the village building or the action roguelike, there are better options for both.
