Pretty much everything you could hope for in a JSR reboot and then some (with a few minor exceptions). The art direction is incredible with the music, characters, and level design feeling staight out of Jet Set. The story is another aspect that I wasn't expecting much of, but after playing for a few hours, I'm pleasantly surprised. The controls are smoother and tighter than JSR with the same general feel but none of that JSR awkwardness. The levels feel way more open and free for exploration which I've been enjoying a lot so far. One of my favorite things about it is the way tagging works in this game. Youre given so many different tags off the bat and the freedom to use any of them whenever you want provided you remember the correct combination. Now, before I get into the bad, let me just say that I by no means am hating on the game. I think it's fantastic and I could see myself playing it for a long while. As someone who has been waiting years for this game, It's one of the few releases that I feel really knocked it out of the park in recent years.

One of things that left me wanting is the trick system. As a more arcadey skate game I can see why there wasn't much depth to controlling the tricks, but as someone who skates, I would've liked to see a little more variation and nuance to performing more advanced tricks that would make them feel that much more satisfying when you do pull them off. Maybe a way to unlock different tricks and switch them out even?

Another minor gripe, DLC. I would've rather paid $45 for the whole game than pay $40 and then another $5 for content that should've been there to begin with. Not a dealbreaker, but not something I was excited about.

The combat leaves something to be desired. I would enjoy it more if there was some way to use the skateboard, bmx bike, or skates, to pull off some cool combos while fighting the enemies like jumping on heads or something. Instead, as soon as you attack, you're forced off and onto your feet. Makes sense, but it takes some freedom away from the player. I never thought of JSR as being a fighting game, so this is a pretty minor issue as I wasn't expecting anything revolutionary, but it's still something that I found myself just a little let down by.

Now that that's out of the way, I couldn't recommend this game more. If you're a skater, fan of JSR, or just like good music, pick it up. It's worth the money.

Fantastically executed take on a classic genre. It's enough of a challenge to make it fun, includes tons of secrets and gear, and will have you staying up late to get through that dungeon you've been mapping.

Insanely difficult. Definitely worth it. So many game references, and so many hours of playtime.
