The Final Shape is pretty good but it definitely doesn't feel like the end of a 10 year story/saga - more like, the end of a story that's been running for the past 3 at MOST. Still - Fantastic Raid, Super Fun Subclass, Decent Story, Incredible Destination, its more good Destiny if you want it (albeit WITHOUT really improving the flawed base game/experience - something I've personally been longing for for such a long time).

Great Gameplay, Real fun. Everything outside of that kinda sucks tbh, progression, game modes, custom games. Still absolutely recommended (tip: if the game stutters and frame drops like crazy try uninstalling the hd texture pack dlc that automatically installs with the game)

[Review updated on 26/06/2023]

I rarely review games, and I don't think I've ever edited a review after the fact. But I felt that a game like Destiny 2 needed a refresh on its review, considering the game is almost unrecognizable since I first reviewed it. When I first wrote this review it was during (at the time) one of the best seasons ever (11, Arrivals), coming right after arguably the worst one (10, Worthy). That was during Shadowkeep, when we still had all the content from D2 launch. This is (almost) 3 years later and Destiny 2 has become one of the least respectable games to play. So let's start with the positives I guess;

Seasons have become much better since then, with even the worst recent season (18, Plunder) being at least comparable to when I first wrote this review (11, Arrivals).

Campaigns have become (or rather, returned to) more mission focused, with less chores to be done in between.

We've had more dungeon and raid content per year (mind you, half of the raid content is refreshed D1 raids, but its still welcome) with 2 dungeons per year since Shadowkeep (bar for Beyond Light, which had 1 in its final season).

QOL updates of the last years have been pretty good, with Loadouts and (eventually...) in-game LFG being standout additions.

---------------

Those are all the positives I can think of of the top of my head. And yeah, they are good things to have gotten in the past *3* years. However, imo, the negatives HEAVILY outweigh everything I just said. So let's get to it;

Content Vaulting. When Content Vaulting was announced, I'll be honest, I really didn't think much of it. It was content I had completed and had no interest going back to. But in hindsight, Content Vaulting has been one of the worst decisions of the last 3 years, especially when Bungie promised us loads of things alongside it (like the FULL Cosmodrome :|, a more stable game ) and they've hardly delivered on most of them (apart from faster patching, which admitedley is very nice). Speaking of which...

Stability. In just this current Season ( 21, Deep) the servers have gone down almost 8 TIMES, and that's WITHOUT including scheduled maintenances for patches etc., and don't even get me started on server stability, with error codes and "Contacting Destiny 2 Servers" just being commonplace nowadays.

And even ignoring server issues, the abundance of glitches has turned this game into a joke. Its seriously demoralizing to play a game and do a hard activity (be it Comp PVP or Grandmaster Nightfalls) just to be disconnected and either lose all your progress or respawn with no abilities and ammo.

The core playlists have been all abandoned. Strikes have been getting trickles of content every year, around 1-2 new strikes or so per year, alongside a bunch of Battlegrounds (which are just longer, more boring and less rewarding strikes :| ) and strikes from D1 (sometimes).

PvP has gotten like, 2? 3? maps in the past 2 years, with 1 of them returning from D1 (you might be seeing a pattern here). Its two biggest updates were the Trials of Osiris update and the Competitive update. Trials (re)-launched to an overwhelmingly negative reception, with abysmal loot, zero incentive to play as a casual player (play, not go flawless necessarily, just... play) and a whole bunch of hackers, all factors which ruined the mode from (almost) day-one.
Comp was a cool idea when it came out in Forsaken, but it was nigh abandoned ever since (bar a few pinnacle weapons, which stopped coming out with Shadowkeep) and a gildable (upgradeable) seal which I don't think even required you stepping foot back in the playlist after getting it once. Comp was then updated, adding a new ranked system which;

1) Mostly rewards you with minimal reputation to rank up and guts you with huge reputation losses per lost game.

2) Is very much not helped by the aformentioned server issues; you can get disconnected from games by no fault of yours and still suffer reputation losses (AND PENALTIES).

And Gambit. Gambit has been abandoned for the past 2 years, not even mentioned in patch notes and blog posts (apart from that 1 map that got in the game). Most Destiny players will tell you that its mostly a joke of a mode nowadays (though it can be pretty fun tbh)

And lets get to the Live Service. Last year, Bungie released what was probably one of, if not their best expansion to Destiny since 2014. It pushed the franchise to heights it had never seen before, with an incredible, cinematic campaign, a fantastic Raid and a well made (if not a bit barren) destination. The seasons were also pretty good (aside from 18, Plunder), but they all suffered from one issue; they were extraordinarily stale and similar to previous ones (2/4 seasons had battlegrounds as their flagship activity, 2!!!).

This year we got Lightfall. An over-hyped, slopily put together expansion with an abysmal, badly written story (which explained absolutely NOTHING and only created more questions, 1 year before the END OF THE CURRENT SAGA), a cool (I guess?) but HILARIOUSLY easy raid and an awful destination with an unreasonable reward/difficulty ratio and forgettable post-campaign content. And lets not forget that Lightfall cost more than WQ (40€ vs 50€), and despite including a season, it still was very much not worth the asking price.

Overall, I'd like to end with my favourite thought about Destiny. It feels incredibly bad to not be able to invite friends to play Destiny with me, when I know that would just involve them getting into a game which doesn't respect them at all, requires an annual subscription for the bare minimum amount of content and relies on fomo and an absurd amount of unrewarding grinding to fulfill its gameplay quota. And this saddens me, considering the fact that I've been playing Destiny since 2016, when it used to be my most favourite game.

Stay away. This one is very much not worth your time or money.

[Original Review written on 16/07/2020] (having played 983 hours)

Destiny 2 is one of the most inconsistently fun games out there. A looter shooter type of game, set in all sorts of planets with three distinct classes, all with appropriate, one of a kind abilities.
  • The gameplay is absolutely fantastic, the environments are gorgeous, the music is amazing.

  • There is SOOOOO MUUUUCH CONTENT AVAILABLE, from casual Strikes and PvP to Raids and the super sweaty Trials of Osiris.

  • Gambit, while pretty annoying at times, is unique and really fun, especially with a full fireteam (Gambit is basically PvPvE, makes more sense if you try it)

  • Playing with friends is just so enjoyable. You can grab some to do pretty much everything this game has to offer. There is also the ability to play Custom Matches in PvP and Gambit

  • Exotics give a unique twist to each weapon archetype. You can use an Ice laser beam, a Pandemic-inducing Pulse rifle, a Worm-God-in-A-Gun sniper rifle and sooo many more!

    HOWEVER!

  • Seasons have been hit or miss ever since their inception, with last season (10) being one of, if not the worst period the game has gone through, and the current season (11) being praised left, right and centre.

  • Expansions have had this issue too, with Forsaken being fantastic and Shadowkeep being mediocre to decent.

  • Stability is a HUUUGE issue too. Bugs and glitches are everywhere (although not as much as they used to be last season [10]). Networking has multiple problems as well, with error codes aplenty.
Despite all its problems, Destiny 2 is a game that I would absolutely recommend you at least try once. You don't have to be the best at aiming (since the majority of this game is pve), Raids are amazing and really fun, styling your character (as limited as it is) is really satisfying and satisfying, and one of the most common compliments; the gunplay, is satisfying, well crafted and in general feels incredible.

8,5/10; still no Cayde statue

City Building Simulation done right. The game is extremely fun and relaxing, with a soundtrack to back that all up, and the workshop community is truly incredible. Only problem seems to be performance. Definitely worth a purchase.

Incredibly fun and entertaining, Turbo Dismount is peefect for those times that you're bored, don't know what to play or just want to wreak havoc on a ragdoll riding a vehicle!
