This will be the first Steam review I've ever written, and it'll be to support the injustice done to this game. 'Mixed' reviews, seriously? And most of them being written in 2018? That's really not fair.

To give a bit of context, you have to go back to when this game was released, in mid 2015. This was the height of the CoD kid era, where every other game is some kind of FPS action with a zombie mode DLC. Triple A city building titles like Sim City 2013 had just flopped, Ubisoft just finished destroying the Anno series by numbing Anno 2205 down to ape-level intelligence, and The Settlers had just gone full browser. Good city builders were few and far between.

Lethis brought back the genre to fans of building games like me, when replaying Emperor/Caesar 3 for the 10th time was getting boring. Since no one reads steam reviews if they're too text-heavy, I'll list out the points:

Pros
  • This game has HUGE charm. Everything from the art direction, the story and the characters. Especially enjoyed the Queen at the end and her machiavellian vibe. It's a pretty standard walker-based city builder but the art and direction is what makes this game very good.
  • Pretty much bug-free. Works well, has low system requirements and runs like a cheetah.
  • The music is glorious.

Cons
  • Quite feature poor. Not much else to do aside from getting the max level occupants. No military or diplomacy.
  • The seasonal work of farms can cause huge unemployment spikes which can kill your city.
  • Production chains are rather basic.
  • Only 1 winning strategy, and that is to level your houses to level 6 or so and tax them. Or tax the elite houses. Trading doesn't bring nearly as much money.

Overall, this game was a very good game, especially considering the City Builder drought of that time and the fact that Triskell is a 5-man operation. Is Lethis the best city builder game? No, certainly not now. Was it in 2015? Possibly.
