Early Access Review
I like the overall feel of the game, although it is in a rough state.

The main menu & UI in general is a bit clunky (ESC does not return you to the previous screen like it does in every other game ever). You only start with 1 gun and it takes a while to unlock more (unless you buy them). In a lot of matches, the teams feel very unbalanced & you will often see one team spawn killing the other team for most of the match (of my first 10 or so games, I think 6-7 ended in a spawn trap). I feel that there could maybe be more servers & maps (and bigger maps too!) The control customization is a bit limited. Generally speaking, it lacks certain things that we take for granted. But that's to be expected I guess...

With that being said, it reminds me of old school battlefield/COD, in a good way. The weapon customization is fairly simple (as it should be - who tf wants spend their time min-maxing a gun with 10 different attachments that hardly do anything). I like the spirit of the game taking the focus away from flashy graphics and trying to nail the fundamentals. The guns feel good. I like the movement speed & TTK, it honestly feels like a BF3 clone in those aspects.

I loved playing this with my gf (now fiancee). There's something addictive about the gameplay loop; completing missions & raiding POIs, stockpiling loot, crafting, building, & of course, defending against hordes of zombies!

I haven't played much since 1.0, but I've really been feeling the urge to play again recently, so it might be time..

I wish I still had the spare time to grind this game. I also haven't really been able to get into CS2 as easily as CSGO because it just feels too different/wrong, though I still like the game, and I still hop on and run some DM/casual every once in a while to get my kicks.

CSGO was the first game that really got me invested in esports. So much fun playing & spectating this game <3

probably my favorite new FPS multiplayer game of the last decade.

the gunplay is smooth and satisfying. the destruction makes things fun and unpredictable and fresh. I haven't explored too many of the weapons, but that's mostly because the AKM and the SR84 feel soooooo good. swinging around the map with a grappling hook & SR84, no-scoping up close & headshotting players across the map is like crack to me - I haven't had that much fun using a sniper since the OG COD:MW2

also, I'm not one to go crazy of cosmetic items in games, but I really like the skins in this game. they are mostly original and pretty well made. it's a free to play game, but I have already spent more on skins & battlepasses than I would have spent on the typical name brand AAA shooter. because I want to support the developer and I honestly really like the skins lol

TLDR: If you have the free time to commit to it & friends to play with, this game can be very rewarding & fun. Otherwise, you're probably better off finding another game. Sincerely, someone who's favorite game is D1...

There was a time when I would have recommended this game over any other game, but that time has long passed. For me, personally, it has become too convoluted & grindy. I just simply don't have the time to watch a ton of videos about builds, or experiment with them, or to figure out which weapons/exotics are meta so I can farm. And the thing is, I know there are plenty of people who DO have the time to do those things and WANT to do them - I know because I used to be one of them, I just cannot commit that much time to the game anymore.

Before anyone comes at me - I know this is not a casual game - it has always required some higher level of time commitment to keep up and farm decent loot. I just feel that the level of time investment required is too high at this point in time - and I can only imagine what that's like for new players. My overall experience of this game currently is a negative one - and so I'm giving it a thumbs down (but think of it more like a "I'm disappointed in you", instead of a "f*** this game").

New players:
This game HANDS DOWN has THE WORST new player experience I have ever witnessed, both with respect to the narrative, and the gameplay mechanics. Much content has been vaulted, and while certain older missions are playable, and there is technically an in-game way to kind of get caught up with what's going on, it's still very jarring. As for the gameplay mechanics - the "tutorial" missions that you play first are lacking and either do not explain certain mechanics, or do so very poorly.

I can't in good conscience recommend D2 to any of my friends, even when it was at its peak. The time investment required to get to a point where you can actually play the fun endgame content is massive, and is a instant non-starter.

Returning players:
Maybe you will feel differently than I did, but I dropped this game several times, and every time I came back I felt lost. Depending on how long ago you stopped playing, it might not be so bad. But you might also jump back in to find new loot sources & activities with literally no in-game explanation on how to use them or get the most out of them.

In D1 I used to complete ALL the weekly activities on 3 characters & then run them again with friends. Now I log on, open the director, & I am overwhelmed by decision paralysis due to the sheer amount of icons flashing at me, beckoning me to play these activities. I'm currently playing through the Final Shape campaign, but after that I'm probably done with the game for good. The loot grind has just gotten too involved for me.
