Imam Ali (as) had many, many virtuous qualities. Personally those that stand out to me the most are his bravery and his ability to view the consequences of events and actions in far reaching ways

For example, he never tried to start a military revolt when his throne was stolen from him because he didnt want to fracture the Ummah and divide Islam from the inside thus making it weak to outside forces like the Byzantines and Sassanids when Islam was still in its infancy

Another example would be his very extended efforts at diplomacy with Muawiya who refused to listen to the orders of the Caliph because of his lust for power, but Ali (as) never stopped trying to have a diplomatic solution to the problem because he knew that political and military infighting would serve only to weaken the Muslims and put them at risk to outside forces

Many Sunnis will have the incredibly shortsighted view and be like “why did Ali not fight for his throne and kill those who hurt his family?”

Its easy to see that he could have, but this restraint in the face of such unadulterated oppression and vitriol is so magnificent that i still struggle with truly appreciating the true nature of it.

Imagine the Prophet (saw) never becoming angry with the pagans of Mecca throwing rocks and feces at him and always being patient, and you can see how Imam Ali (as) is such a perfect successor and follower of the Prophet’s (saw) teachings

Compare this to Muawiya who had people beheaded for not liking his son or Uthman. Example: He killed Hujr bin Adi, a very brave and honorable sahabi, because he wouldnt curse Ali (as) and refused to praise Uthman

With Imam Hussein (as) you see the willingness to surrender yourself fully and completely to your beliefs and refuse to allow your Deen, the most valuable construct in this Dunya and the Next, to become warped into a political tool by filthy people like Yazid and his ilk
