Early Access Review
This game just absolutely nails its melee combat in a way I haven't seen any first person game do recently. Enemies have a good freeze when you hit, and the insistence on using the parry mechanic, shield bashing and kicking means that what could easily have been a button masher becomes a puzzle that you need to carefully consider to solve. Within an hour, you're paying attention to timing, technique and positioning. It's like a mix of Souls and Doom with a little Hades thrown in for good measure. If I had one complaint, it's the the default graphics settings are a little *too* crunchy, and I had to tweak some settings to get it to my ideal.

It also runs great on a Steam Deck, and the "pick it up, put it down" gameplay loop supports jumping in for 15 minutes at a time, clearing a floor, and then going back to work.

Game ♥♥♥♥♥ like a champion. If this is early access, I can't wait to see what the full release looks like.

I don't write reviews that often, and I haven't even put that much time into this game yet, but as I'm getting back into it a little bit, I'm realizing that it's a perfect "pick it up, put it down" game for Steam Deck. If you have one, you should get this, it's worth the modest asking price for something you can play without needing to invest a big chunk of time.

I've gotten my money's worth out of this. It's a good chill thing to play with friends but not have to spend a ton of mental effort strategizing. It's also a nice casual thing to play by yourself, for those times when you want to play something, but also have other things you need to get done at the same time.

I think the art style lends itself well to playing on lower spec hardware, so it's also great for laptops or portable systems.

I won't pretend that it's perfect -- since it is just a turn based RPG, the core game loop can get stale after a while. The lore unlock system helps to keep it somewhat fresh, forcing you to try different game modes to unlock all the gear, but there's only so much you can do with ground this well trod.

I'd say get it. For the price, you probably won't be disappointed, and it's an instant recommend if you happen to get it on sale.

Look, it's not that the game is bad, exactly. It's the kind of B-Tier game we've gotten forever. It's just that this time, it costs $60, which is simply too much for what you're getting. If the game was $40, I'd say go ahead and grab it if you want something that reminds you of the PS2 era, but with some modern creature comforts and an excellent aesthetic.

I'll probably still finish it, and maybe even play it twice.

Oh, and do yourself a favor and set the narrator to Japanese. It makes the whole thing feel better.

At its best when you have some friends around. When this game pops off, it really pops off.

Great selection of weapons and equipment keeps everything fresh, and multiple paths allow for a lot of replay value.

And you can't forget about the music. This game sounds great.

Just play it, you'll probably like it.

Early Access Review
Still Early Access, of course, but so far the experience has been smooth, and it runs great in Proton. It's a nice change over the standard Pokemon formula, and requires just a touch more strategy out of the player.

If I had to describe it, I would say this game is an alternate evolution of Gen 1 -- it brings back that old feel with a bit of grinding and having fixed points for healing and swapping out Temtems, but also brings forward some welcome touches like double battles being the standard, a one-shot team heal and improved interactions with NPCs. Oh, and a mini-map.

We all know what the inspiration is, but this game brings enough of its own spin to the table to keep me interested, and if you like those old games and feel the new ones are a bit too streamlined for you, this is probably a good get.

If you run MacOS or Linux, do not buy this game. And honestly, even on Windows, you'll probably eventually be forced to use Epic's launcher instead, so probably still don't buy it. The game was fun, while it lasted, but I cannot recommend buying from a studio that revokes features in an attempt to appease their new corporate overlords.

Hard pass.
