Sarcasm followed by a real review.
When considering whether or not to purchase this game, it is a good idea to keep in mind that this game is based on Super Combo Brothers: Melee; not Rivals of Aether 1, don't worry that's a common misconception. For those unfamiliar with
the name, Nintendo renamed the product from "smash" to "combo" when they realized that the name falsely gave people the impression that hitting the opponent with smash attacks was a good idea.
In traditional fighting games like the Street Fighter series, the goal is to knock opponents out of the ring regardless of their health. Rivals, on the other hand, utilizes the damage (as opposed to health) system as the only means to defeat the opponent; you must bring their damage number up from 0 to over 100%. A character with this high of a damage % is considered broken, and thus defeated. Because of this, combos are very important. This is why, if you've ever watched Melee, you've seen Fox speed around combo'ing people. You'll often hear people say that the great part about Melee is that not only is it incredibly well balanced, there are so many different ways to play. To succeed you have to adapt to the environment and the opponent's movement.
Similarly, this game offers a variety of playstyles. You have 10 (at time of writing) whole characters that you can do combos with! So that you don't forget, this is a reminder that smash attacks are bad. "If they're so bad, why are they still in the game?" you might wonder. Luckily, I am well equipped to answer that, as I've spoken with various community members.
Smash attacks are in this game for a particular set of reasons, which are as follows:
To allow characters with fast down smash attacks to crouch cancel (hold down to instantly recover from being hit, aka hitstun) then down smash you. Ranno is a good example of this.
For characters who have mechanics (more commonly known as "gimmicks") that utilize them. Zetterburn's smash attacks are powered up when striking an opponent who is on fire, for example.
And finally, so that community members can inform you that you shouldn't be using them. A common phrase you might hear is "Why would you use a smash attack then/there!?" This helps reinforce the idea that combos are THE way you should be playing the game.
/sarcasm

If you aren't familiar with the first game, but are familiar with the Smash Bros. series, you'll recognize some moves and mechanics.
If you have familiarity with the first game, you will be familiar with most of the characters and their movesets, plus a decent amount of the game mechanics.
If you're new to the game and genre, this is a fast paced game with lots of freedom to move around and attack opponents.
Rivals 2 adds in some of the mechanics that Rivals 1 removed, namely shields, grappling (grabs), and ledge grabs. This brings it much closer to a Smash Bros. (primarily Melee, albeit smoother) style of gameplay.
Unfortunately, most of my biggest annoyances with Smash Bros. stem from these things, which is why I was ecstatic that Rivals 1 didn't have them, and one of the reasons I loved it so much. When I compare this game to Rivals 1, it feels
a little sluggish, and some of the recoveries feel particularly long. This may change with time, and will definitely differ from character to character. As you might guess from the above sarcasm, the community has some frustrating
members. That said, there are also some absolutely stellar members, especially in the official discord server.

Ultimately if you enjoy this style of game, I think your enjoyment of Rivals 2 will come down to how much you like/dislike the shield/grapple/ledge grab mechanics. If, like me, you aren't a fan of those, you might enjoy Rivals 1 more, but if you like or are neutral to them, this game is a fine choice.

It's a surreal, and very unique story game. I found even the background characters interesting to listen to.
There is some gameplay, but it's primarily a story driven game.

Translations could use some work, but otherwise it's great, and has a lot of content. I thoroughly enjoyed how you focus on a single girl throughout the story. Got way more than I expected with this purchase, and highly recommend it. Now hopefully my friends don't see this and excommunicate me...

It's a great game. Controls are very smooth, the game is easy to play, the writing is hilarious, overall I've enjoyed my time playing.

Editing the review, since I forgot I made one, lol. I played this entirely on Steam Deck. Overall the experience was super smooth, but occasionally the deck will get hot, combine this with a ton of particle effects, and the game will start skipping frames and be laggy for a few minutes. Smooths out and returns back to normal afterward though.

Don't bother. Forgot to mention the constant disconnects. Game hasn't been out 2 weeks, and every public mission has a max level player(s) speedrunning through it so you can't do anything. 3 of the last 4 level 9 missions I was in had 2 level 40s and a level 34+. I'm level 16; can't even get a shot off before the enemies are dead. Most of the time they are playing Bunny, so they run much faster than you, and kill stuff before you can even get to the areas. On top of that it's insanely overmonetized: $100 for a single "ultimate" character and a skin; the non-ultimate versions of the same characters have less stats, and there are "ultimate exclusive" skins.

The game is unfinished, and I think it might have been abandoned. Wasn't really my cup of tea. Maybe I've just played too many other programming games, but this one felt a little restrictive, like there was only 1 right answer for most levels.
