Brigador is easily one of the best games on Steam.

The frantic combat is tough-but-fair. High replayability with things kept interesting by a huge number of choices in vehicle type, each with pros / cons, and a large array of different kinds of weapons. Stealth mechanics are not particularly deep, but their simplicity lends itself well to the game's general sense of urgency. Fast-paced action and precision is balanced well with tactical maneuvering and thinking on your feet. Find your niche in personal style and thrive.

Like any proper retro-inspired action game, the story does not get in the way of the game. There are no cutscenes, or even screens that force you to read about what's going on. If you so choose, however, the game's grimdark setting shines through narrative in the form of technical and personal descriptions displayed as notes written by characters in game, complete with a touch of dark humor that never feels out of place.

I did not expect a game primarily about piloting mechs and blowing things up to have an incredibly rich, dark aesthetic. While not cyberpunk, it grips tightly to the same tone of a cold, cynical dystopia lit frequently by neon. The gritty style of the game's graphics is used to grand effect with cool-looking weapon effects and explosions. While it carries a certain oldschool feel, being set on an isometric plane, Brigador does not look or feel dated, partially due to its clever use of shaders.

The music, composed by Makeup and Vanity Set (MAVS), could singlehandedly give any best-of playlist put together by New Retrowave a run for its money. This reason alone should justify a purchase if you enjoy music like Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, Mega Drive, or Power Glove.

This game is good. It is quite possibly the peak of indie gaming. I cannot recommend it enough. Buy it.

Early Access Review
Project Zomboid has been in development for EIGHT YEARS now, and it's still lacking major features that were promised (AI characters, working vehicles, proper animations, which Indie Stone claimed were around the corner when it launched in Early Access in 2013). While some bugs have been fixed, the game still feels extremely incomplete, especially in contrast to what was promised.

I chose to hold off on leaving a negative review for nearly half a decade, solely because the developers have consistently made progress reports on a near weekly basis. It wasn't until I really looked into it that I realized the truth: these updates are a fraud. This game has basically not progressed in development in any real or meaningful way in years. The updates they publish in their news are frequently misleading, vague, or outright lies. This game is nearly identical to its state when it first hit Early Access. I know, I played it then, and I occasionally download it to see the "progress" for myself.

If you look up sales figures on this game, you can find they have made millions of dollars pushing this mess for years. They certainly put more effort into writing these weekly reports than they do actually working on the game. There's really no excuse for that.

This game should not be sold under these conditions. Calling the game "Early Access" does not excuse the lying.

Early Access Review
Not counting total shovelware titles and scam games, this is probably the worst game I have ever played. I bought this game not long after it was released in Early Access (3 years ago -- it's still in Alpha, or whatever) and periodically load it up again, just to see that things have changed, but never improved. It is useful mostly as example #1 in why I should be cautious buying games in Early Access.

Here are three reasons why you shouldn't purchase this game:

1) Atrocious performance. I have a PC with an Intel i7 6700k, 64GB of DDR4, a GTX 1080, and a very fast SSD. With settings turned moderately up, nowhere near the max, and in 1920x1080 resolution, I average about 20 FPS. It's almost unbelievable how poorly it performs, considering I can run many other much better looking games on Ultra in 4k. This game has ran like ♥♥♥♥ on every machine I've installed it on. And yes, I always have updated drivers and other depedent software.

2) Scorn for the consumer. Facepunch (in particular Garry) regularly issues public statements indicating they do not care about the issues people who purchased this game are having. In response to completely legitimate concerns and criticisms, they have told people to stop playing the game. They have alienated huge numbers of what fanbase they had, especially when deciding to scrap and re-work the game multiple times, abandoning "legacy" versions of the game that people had grown attached to. I'm not even one of those people and it annoyed me.

3) Toxic community. I'm aware this phrase gets tossed around a lot, but my play experiences with this game are easily the worst of any multiplayer game I've come across. Server admins regularly abuse the game to the point of irrelevance. If you are on a server with a little egomaniac, be prepared to be kicked, harassed, and banned for almost any reason at all, especially if you attack them or their friends. I have regularly been killed before even spawning into the game (while the screen was loading) with children screaming into their microphones with laughter. Any criticism or praise of this game on these forums, or on reddit or elsewhere, will earn you abuse from people who disagree with you.

I enjoy other sandbox survival games, like DayZ, Don't Starve, and 7 Days to Die. This game is a lot like those, but worse in pretty much every measurable way. Do not give this developer your money.

I am generally skeptical of Early Access games, so I was initially hesitant to buy Killing Floor 2 before it was fully completed. The development quality and overall fun I've had playing Tripwire Interactive's earlier games -- Red Orchestra, Dwarfs?!, and the original Killing Floor, were what convinced me to go ahead with my purchase, and I haven't been disappointed.

Killing Floor 2 is basically a model of what an Early Access game should be like. When I first got the game it was highly playable, with plenty of content to keep me interested in coming back to the game. It's received fairly regularly content updates in the ~9 months I've had it, including weapons, characters, enemies, levels, and game modes. It's still not out of Early Access, but it feels and plays pretty much like a fully finished game, and has for awhile.

The game can best be described as a brutal, gory, wave-based co-op FPS with a focus on teamwork. It has loads of community content, including many vanilla and popular custom levels from the original game. The controls and immersive feedback of the weapon handling is something Tripwire is known for, and the weapons themselves feel powerful and rewarding to use. The soundtrack is an excellent mix of metal, industrial, and dark ambience.

I even bought several copies of this game to play with my friends. I haven't regretted my purchases. Highly recommended.

-----

I wrote this review nearly a year ago, and during that time there was a flood of butthurt babies who were upset with some very trivial decisions Tripwire made regarding this game. Despite the fact that this game was finished within a reasonable timeframe (and continues to get updates), they were unhappy with the pace, and mad that it was getting ported to PS4, despite the fact that the port was being developed by a different internal team.

This game is wonderful, and I keep coming back to it with my friends. It's a worthy successor to the original, which was also a blast. I still highly recommend this game.

Insurgency is the world's foremost kebab removal simulator. Whether you enjoy a little deus vult or a little allahu ackbar, Insurgency will put you right in the conflict and allow you to blow some brains from out some skulls.

The controls and the game's overall mechanical feel have a close resemblance to Red Orchestra, meaning they somewhat accurately model a realistic tactical experience without going full zperg like Arma. Insurgency also has several great co-op modes. Its level design is interesting and varied, with the inclusion of stealthy night missions, and a number of different urban, rural, and remote locations.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys tactical shooters.
