There are many games that exist to challenge the definition of games, games that exist to challenge storytelling, games that exist to challenge freedom and purpose. We live in a decade of experimentation and risk in videogame history.

Too few, however, set their sights on challenging the player. Accomodation is the route of almost every game; compromise, rampant especially in the way of difficulty, to cater to the widest audience, to help those who are otherwise unwilling or slow to adapt the tempo of the game's intended rythym, the intricate systems of play, far to the detriment of creative vision. Dark Souls is a master class in not only a challenging game, but a game that is uncomprimising in its vision of experience. A game where there is no truer saying than practice makes perfect.

A game that has something to teach you about itself. One where you will do nothing but learn, and learn, and learn, until you succeed. And once you have, there is no higher place to stand. No game is as satisfying to overcome, to master. None.
