I love this game so much and am so happy that the developers have kept up the good work in making sure this game becomes what it should have been on release.
However! Charging $30 for the upcoming dlc expansion for content that should have been in the base game is ridiculous. The two biggest complaints about Victoria 3 has been the shallow diplomacy and the war system being lackluster. Not addressing the issue with the war system and getting the diplomacy system to be closer to how it was in Victoria 2 feels like an insult to Vic3's dwindling number of loyal fans.

Early Access Review
This is probably one of the best games I have ever played.

The gameplay is incredible. Unlike other zombie survival games, guns are more of a hindrance than something actually useful. A well-prepared survivor, with a good handle on all of their moodles alongside a stockpile of ammunition, can surely eliminate entire hordes. However, an unprepared survivor with a revolver and a handful of bullets will soon find themselves chased by the entire town, with hundreds of infected chasing down the player. Surviving is difficult in a world where nowhere is safe. Sometimes it's better to walk away than to try to face a group of zombies that comes banging on your door.

The character progression is amazing. Starting out obese causes your character to be unable to climb tall fences, or scratch themselves badly when hopping over smaller ones. Starting out underweight makes your melee damage feel like you're poking someone with a squeaky toy hammer instead of a metal one. Surviving long enough to improve all your skills makes you feel unstoppable, until a zombie sneaks behind you and you get that one fatal bite that ruins everything.

While there is no story aspect to the game, the world itself alongside the details within every house and building, supplemented by the annotated maps, tells a beautiful and horrible story of how the world went down. When you get the chance, listen in on the emergency radios or news television, or travel through one of the busier highways: you'll see hundreds of infected wandering on a highway that seemingly is empty and without any vehicles, until you find an endless roadblock of wrecked cars and a few more infected lingering about. The visual storytelling behind just that Sunday drive really makes us feel like we are a part of this apocalypse.

The sound design is just wow. There's only a handful of soundtracks in the game, but every single one of them goes hard. The atmosphere feels thick, especially as a newer player, as zombies would bang on every window and door around you. The sound of every weapon feels substantial, along with that sweet watermelon-squashing sound of an infected finally dying. The high-pitched jumpscare sound that follows up with the heightened heartbeat of the character causing panic of the same caliber for the player. Even the calmer moments in the game, listening to the mumbling of a television or radio broadcast, while turning through pages on an educational book, and shoveling graves to throw the hundred or so corpses outside of your newly-established base, establishes this sense that you are really a part of this world.

Also, there are A LOT of amazing community-made mods which enhances your experience in the game. Quality-of-life changes or just fun extras or challenges, definitely give them a try.

I played this game in 2022 and there haven't been any updates since 3 years ago. Even after finishing the game half a year ago, I still think of Days Gone when hopping on my bike.

At the current state, the game works perfectly fine despite having some major glaring bugs concerning AI tracking and level loading. The latter is more gamebreaking, so make sure to save often as you progress through the game because sometimes you will fall through the floor and send you back to your latest save. For the AI tracking, it's most obvious with marauder bikers and breakers <- enemy NPCs that recognize your location but get stuck on walls.

Despite these issues, Days Gone is a charming game with an enjoyable story experience with that dopamine rush of a gameplay loop. The amount of times I've had Deacon murdered by a horde really tells the story that the zombies, i mean freakers, are dangerous. The music stands out the most as it really drags you into the world and tells you what kind of world this game is. Gunplay is underwhelming initially in the early game, but it begins to shine after a few investments into ranged and unlocking new weapons. The world design is beautiful with the day night cycle and weather implementation. The devs really captured the beauty of Oregon. The level design can be questionable especially with the caves and their way of linearizing open areas with red "Do not pass or mission aborts" zones.

While I do not share the mindset and beliefs that Deacon St. John has, empathizing and feeling what he's feeling in the moment is a testament to the great acting and visual storytelling that Bend and PS Studios have given us. I felt compelled to follow through Deacon's story and completed the game within a week. Deacon is always fuming with rage when encountering his enemies, which makes sense considering the story that gets revealed to us over time.

I recommend this game to anyone who is looking for some fun horde killing.
Gameplay 5/5

I really enjoyed the game. The worldbuilding and level design are beautiful and the gameplay is challenging.

It's a short game and feels incomplete, hinting towards a sequel, which honestly took longer than expected to release.

After a certain point when you figure out the gameplay loop, the combat becomes dull. However, that will not be a major issue due to the length of the game unless you went for 100% achievements.

I would recommend anyone to play this game as the journey in of itself well makes up for its shortcomings.
