TL;DR
Not recommended as a start of SRW series in Steam.
Check SRW V first, if you like it, grab SRW X.

After completing V and X, I can say that V is much better than X (although technically both are same game with different roster but X has slightly improved mechanics)

  • The pros:
  1. The return of several series that have appeared in the SRW Z3, with new HD addition of Aura Battler Dunbine, Beltorchika's Children and Gundam F91.
  2. The debut series are unique (Nadia: the Secret of Blue Water, Mashin Hero Wataru, G-Reco, Buddy Complex) but unfortunately Nadia have to start their story from near the end of their series
  3. They include custom bgm to both V and X
  4. The game feels quite challenging at the highest difficulty if you play it without DLCs bonuses

  • The cons:
  1. Original MCs are boring compared to V.
  2. Several series debuted on V were chosen again as one of the main plots of the story (Cross Ange, Might Gaine, Shin Mazinger). Some of concepts from those series, that have been presented in V, are altered in order to match X's story (Both games are standalone series and not connected with each other). As the story goes on, it gradually becomes more and more boring and annoying because the enemy's motives we encountered from those series are same in V and eventually it just repeats some part of V's story (Except Mazinkaiser's debut, its amazing tho).
  3. Technical issues such as inconsistent translation are still the same as in V.

I write this review after completed the game. I know its two years old game, but I think this game manages to nail it for a debut series on Steam. I recommend to buy it If you:
  • like and played SRW before but never had a chance to play V on console
  • want to try SRW series. It's a good way to start from here.

    Things I like:

    1. Decent port
Even an 8 years old potato like mine can run it smoothly without any problem.

    2. Mouse control
I used to play older SRW series with controller and keyboard (for emulators). I never thought that playing SRW with mouse will feel that good. Ten minutes learning and I was able to master it. All I have to do is to find the right sensitivity.

    3. Cheaper price for alternative
If you have PS or Switch but don't want to throw more money it's a very good alternative. (As I write this) compared to PS4/Vita version, they still give it a full price (almost twice from Steam) on PS store without any DLCs and Switch version price is about 50% more (both are on my region).

    4. Soundtrack
They never fail to amaze me with their music arrangement. Both new comer or returning soundtrack are equally good, and I'm finally able to say "Good bye 'MS in the Flash', welcome back 'Fleet Battle', its been a long time".

    5. Story of debut series
I talk about Yamato 2199, Cross Ange and Might Gaine. They manage to do justice from those series.

    6. Nine
You'll understand after you play the game.

Things that "not a big deal" for me:

    1. Switch port
Some claim that the quality is not as good as PS4 version and I agree that the image quality sometimes not as crisps as I expected.

    2. No custom BGM
On the bright side, we can still mod it!

    3. Recycled from older series
Some returning characters's animations, voices and BGMs are heavily recycled from Z3 series (probably due to high production cost), but at least they give a little small touch (extra animation/cut scene, voice line or even a whole new attack) to keep it fresh.

    4. No premium soundtrack edition
Just like the other English console version. Just mod it tho.

    5. Super Gundam Wars
8 out of 18 series (10 out of 26 if counting subseries) are Gundams and they have a longer list of mechs compared to the other series. There are many scenarios where the most units I sortied are from Gundams.
Don't get me wrong, I love Gundam, but the way they force everything on them without so much important story roles just feels weird.

    6. characters story is too short
They just blend with another universe, without so much things happen on their own story.

    7. Difficulty
The DLC items may tone down the difficulty from 'quite challenging' to 'easy enough' on standard mode.

    Things I don't like:

    1. Keyboard control
Simply to put: It's horrible. I recommend to play the game with controller or at least with mouse and keyboard. I tried to play the game with full keyboard mapping (just like how I used to with emulator) and just give up after one hour on 6 pages of key binding; not to mention clunky WASD/arrow control.
How did they f-up keyboard control while mouse control feels good?

    2. Inconsistent and miss translation
It's not a machine translated text quality but the way their editor handle it seems awful. It's not merely typos but the translation quality itself. Even some translation aren't fit with the characters at all.
    Few examples of inconsistent translation:
  • On a certain point of the game ( Black Mightgaine secret scenario ), they translate Japanese tongue twister words to "She Sells Seashells by the Seashore" and I like how they fit it so English speaker can easily understand. After that scenario, they just throw that away and use the original Japanese words instead.
  • Some characters name sometimes addressed with romaji instead of how they should be spelled. (ex: Luna addressed as Runa in some scenario)
  • Eva Unit-01 map cutscenes during 'Berserk' and 'Pseudo-Evolution' aren't translated, while the other characters cutscene from another series are translated.
  • Some spirit commands name that listed on pilot skill list are different from Ace bonus description.

    Little advice:
  • F10 is for soft reset the game if you want to quick reset and load in the middle of a stage
  • Always check factory after a scenario for bonus/short story

I really hope BAMCO really look at their English speaker fans, especially on PC. Not just releasing their little known oversea product to PC environment more, but also improve their quality so everyone can enjoy it without any problem.

The Pre-Sequel is basically a less funnier version of Borderlands 2 with small tweaks on the game mechanics.

It still a decent game.
