In-Depth Breakdown

World and Exploration
The world of AC Odyssey is filled with sprawling towns, forests and long stretches of water. There are many points of interests ranging from military encampments to ancient temples. Exploration is mostly done on foot, (water bodies are explored on boats/ship, of course) but you also have your own horse that you can call whenever.

Water bodies are filled sharks and merchant/pirate/bandit/military ships and boats to kill and destroy while the forests sprawl with animals like bears, lions, deer, etc. There are also many ancient temples, which almost always contain a small environmental puzzle of some sort. In cities you may find military encampments and loot locations. There are military and bandit encampments in the forests too.

There are many historical landmarks such as Athens, The Grave Of Sisyphos, The Statue Of Kronos, The Statue Of Poseidon, The Altar Of Prometheus, The Sanctuary Of Delphi, The Statue Of Athena, etc.

While exploring, look out for loot, which is literally everywhere.

There is fast travel.

Characters
I personally didn’t find the protagonist interesting, I felt like the dialogue choices took away from their likeness rather than supplement it in any way. There are some good and memorable characters in the game like Brasidas, for example. The voice acting, through the main storyline atleast, is good.

Cultists System
This was one of my favourite parts of the game. It is basically a list of people you have to uncover by acquiring clues about them through letters, writings and side/main quests, and then assassinate them. There was something really satisfying about going through the list and assassinating them one by one.

Scouting
Scouting is done using your trusty eagle, Ikaros. Ikaros can help you spot threats, treasures, hidden entrances, resources, etc.

Side Quests
AC Odyssey if full of quests all over it’s world. There are the typical fetch quests and kill 'x' amounts of people quests present in a daily quest randomly generated format. Overall, the side quests in AC Odyssey are OK, there are some interesting quests but most to me felt mundane.

Inventory Management
You carry the following items on you: melee weapons, bows, five pieces of armour (head, arms, torso, waist, legs) and mounts.

There are different kinds of melee weapons: regular swords, axes, heavy blades, heavy blunts, spears, etc. You can initially equip one melee weapon but an ability allows you to equip two at a time.

Unlike AC Origins, there aren’t different types of bows. Some abilities however allow you to acquire the Predator shot and Rapid fire etc.

Armour pieces can be slotted in and out individually and unlike AC Origins actually affect stats.

Combat
Combat in AC Odyssey feels fluid, animations flow nicely, controls don’t feel wonky and the parry system works nicely. It feels better to play than AC Origins.

Combat can be hard when playing on harder difficulties and especially so when the level difference between you and the enemy is more than about five levels. There seems to be a soft cap that just doesn’t allow you to do as much damage to an enemy more than 5 levels above you.

The various types of abilities in AC Odyssey makes it much more dynamic than AC Origins. You have abilities that allows you bring lighting upon the enemies, shoot arrows through walls, etc.

Stealth
Memorising enemy petrol patterns, positioning yourselves accordingly, and then striking from the shadows is the kind of stealth in this game. You pass through enemy camps while remaining crouched in tall grass, whistle to attract nearby enemies towards you, and then stick your "hidden blade" (a spear in AC Odyssey's case) through them. Stealth in AC Odyssey is very forgiving and is very easy to get into.

Abilities
There is a decent amount of abilities in AC Odyssey mainly divided into three trees – Stealth, Melee, and Ranged.

Stealth: Some abilities allow you to assassinate from a distance, increase assassination damage, distract enemies by spawning friendly NPCs, apply poison damage to enemies, etc.

Melee: Some abilities allow you to apply burning on your weapon permanently, bring down lighting upon your enemies, charge like a bull, heal, etc.

Ranged: Some abilities give you access to the Predator shot, Rapid fire, shooting arrows through walls, shooting arrows with increased damage, etc.

Ship
You ride upon the Adrestia, your personal ship (which also acts a mobile fast travel point). You can upgrade your ship using resources gathered from looting and dismantling gear. You can upgrade the ships health, the rowing stamina of your sailors and the damage dealt by arrows and spear. The ship combat itself is fine, it does the job.

Expansions (Legacy of the First Blade & The Fate of Atlantis)
I played through both the expansions aswell. In short – I didn’t find the story of either particularly interesting, the locations of The Fate of Atlantis are beautiful though. I would suggest doing a little research before buying the expansions through the season pass/ better editions/ individually.

Final Thoughts
Overall, Assassins Creed Odyssey is an excellent open-world RPG that brings new mechanics to the series and deepens some from Assassin’s Creed Origins. Gameplay is well thought out and fluid. It took me 172 hours to finish the game (including both expansions) on Normal Difficulty, while exploring the whole map(s) thoroughly and completing everything the game has to offer. I also managed to achieve 100% achievements in a single playthrough. I can recommend buying at a discount.
