This game is a never-ending series of small dopamine hits that will have you neglecting all of life's other essentials as you choose to instead wander across the surface of yet another of an infinite number of planets.

Gather and hoard resources. Craft things. Completely ignore the main storyline. Build a house. Build a lab. Kill bad guys and take their base decorations. Make your perfect outfit. Jump into janky multiplayer with your friends and then wind up at ground zero when one of your friends drops a nuke in a city you're standing in (true story). Play it until you burn out. Then put it down for a while. Then come right back to it again after a few weeks or months and do it all again with a totally new character.

Mods. Mods. Mods. Mods are life. Frackin' Universe is mandatory. Download new races and tools. Be a furry space cat. Abuse the admin commands. Become God. Then pine for the simple life, start over, and do it all again.

Starbound.

Lots of fun for twenty bucks. Winged flight is excellent and should (somehow) remain in the series.

Story is barebones and pretty much all missions are just hell versions of the normal diversions you're used to in the Saints Row universe. With all of the work that obviously went into this game, it's a crying shame that more of it wasn't utilized in a meaningful way. It may be a glorified DLC, but there is just SO MUCH POTENTIAL here for something MUCH greater.

If they were to make a fully-hellified honest-to-Satan jam-packed feature-sized version with real missions, character customization, and the whole nine yards, I would buy the hell out of it at full price.

As it stands, you're kind of getting a third for a third.

Still recommended, though.

Buy it when it goes on sale and have a few laughs. The characters, setting, and banter are great. Just don't expect the actual poker part to be fun. This game cheats and it cheats HARD. In real life, your odds of getting heads in a coinflip is 1:2. In this game, it's more like 1:6.

Try it. Wait for all but one opponent to be eliminated and go all in with a good initial deal. Mathematically speaking, you should have a 50% chance of having the best hand at the end. Despite this, the computer ALMOST ALWAYS manages to get one better card than you.
