Puppet Combo's most polished and accessible title to date. Places the player in the middle of a deliciously creepy and campy B-movie romp and it doesn't wear out its welcome by being too demanding nor too simple. It's the perfect balance of challenge and intrigue where you will be wanting to find out what happens next but simultaneously being too unnerved to proceed. Easy recommendation for anybody looking to get into horror games and don't want just another walking simulator nor P.T. clone. Being able to customize the visual experience so much is just icing on the cake with multiple video effects available as well as an easily adjustable set of camera options for players who prefer first or third person perspectives.

One of the most uncompromising and consistently harrowing survival-horror titles I've ever endured.

I adore all things horror and I can with some confidence say that this may very well be one of the most relentlessly frightening experiences I've felt so mercilessly immersed in.

It has it's fair share of problems, more than once I took a cheap or glitchy death and lost progress due to a bugs but even that couldn't keep me away. The trail & error moments can be incredibly disheartening and escape truly feels hopeless throughout... But for me, it made conquering the brutal trials and chipping away at the many challenges before you made it feel more rewarding when the walls fall and progress is at long last cemented.

SOOTH is impossibly engaging in ways that few games can manage. Your survival is constantly being questioned and tested in ways that border on the supremely sadistic.

Yet no matter how tense I felt, how frustrated I was when failure set me back, I just couldn't keep away from this monster of a survival horror experience.

Top marks from coming from a horror aficionado and enthusiast.

This game is rivaled only by Alien: Isolation & Amnesia: The Bunker in terms of game play scope and raw unimaginable terror. Consider yourself warned, this game does not mess around.

It's an endlessly daunting nightmare and one that I just couldn't put down or get out of my head.

Unquestionably one of the finest indie horror efforts Steam has ever seen since Team Psykskallar's 2012 masterpiece *Cry of Fear*. This game is focused and refined to a near-blades edge when it comes to unsettling the player and keeping them on their toes. Definitely for fans of witchy, folksy, supernatural, in-the-woods type horror with a solid blend of demanding gameplay & unapologetic ferocity. I haven't yet defeated the final boss but I will recommend 666% as one few modern horror games to so deftly keep me this hooked and this on-edge. There's even a roguelike mode as well for those who feel that this game isn't nerve-shredding enough. Not for the faint of heart..

10 Year Retrospective Review- Does F.E.A.R. Still Hold Up?

Short answer: Yes.

When I first sat down to begin my pre-review playthrough, the first thing that stood out to me about Monolith's seminal FPS was just how astoundingly well it has aged. Much like Half-Life 2 before it, F.E.A.R.'s atmospherics, story, and most importantly gameplay are still respectible and even outstanding by today's standards.

Story:
You assume the role of an elite special forces operative known only as the "Point Man." Your mission- stop a rogue psychic commader leading a battalion of cloned supersoldiers. Along the way you'll encounter many different faces, enemies, and settings in your pursuit of your target. The closer you come to apprehending your mark, the more you realize that there are far more parties involved in this incident. A multi-million dollar corporation, a handful of researchers and scientist, and most importantly- a little girl in a red dress. F.E.A.R. is disturbing, convoluted, creative, and dark, and as the story twists and winds like a spider's web you will find yourself drawn in and immersed.

Gameplay:
Where F.E.A.R. truly excels in more than any other aspect is in it's perfectly executed combat. F.E.A.R. enjoys being caught between the old-fashioned shooters of yesteryear and the more modern flare seen nowadays. For example, you can only carry 3 weapons, but each weapon you'll find is fun to use and different. Or how you need to track down health packs although your health will self-regenerate up to a certain point (dependant on difficulty). Every bit of F.E.A.R.'s gameplay feels polished. The weapons are nice and vaired, combat is tight and responsive, melee combat is surprisingly viable and fun throughout. Crucial to all of this is F.E.A.R.'s revolutionary enemy AI. Replica soldiers are smart, reactive, deadly, and always find ways to surprise you. Just the other day during my 6th or so playthrough of this game I witnessed interesting new tactics deployed by the enemies that I hadn't seen before.

Presentation:
At 2005, F.E.A.R. was arguably the prettiest looking FPS since 2004's Half-Life 2. Showcasing many advanced lighting and particle effect techniques, F.E.A.R. was an absolutely gorgeous game in it's prime. 10 years removed, it has begun to showcase a few cracks in the paint. Character models are still good looking, and the particle effects still look excellent, but certain items, enemies, and locations are looking a bit dated. None of this is a dealbreaker, though, and where F.E.A.R. truly shines is in it's brilliant atmospherics. Every location you explore has it's own interesing themes, visual design, and flow. Shows dart about menacingly, sounds goad you into checking over your shoulder, apparitions follow you about, and all of it is perfectly scored to an oppressive, disturbing, brilliant soundtrack.

Package:
Unfortunately, the game's weakest aspect is most certainly in it's replayability. A lack of other gamemodes, multiplayer, or unlockables will surely mean you'll only play through this game for it's single player campaign. The campaign is long enough, and depending on your personal skill will take bewteen 9-18 hours. Fortunately for those who find one lone campaign to not be enough, this version comes with both of F.E.A.R.'s excellent expansion packs. Each comes with a compelling single-player storyline that builds on top of F.E.A.R.'s twisted mythos that will last you anywhere between 6-12 hours. Perseus Mandate in particular is worth replaying for adding several new enemy types, weapons, and a slew of bonus "instant-action" missions.
If this wasn't enough to win you over, keep in mind that even 10 year's later, I still enjoyed it every bit as much as the first time. That's gotta count for something.

Recommended.

Pros:
-Engaging story
-Precise, fun, refined gameplay
-Loads of weapons, each as fun to use as the next
-Atmospherics rivaled only by the best of survival horror games
-Responsive, challenging enemies who've yet to be matched by any other FPS
-Comes packaged in with both of Vivendi's expansions, easily doubling the playtime

Cons:
-Lack of replay value
-Neither of Vivendi's expansions are considered canon to F.E.A.R.'s official sequels (sadly)
-Some environments can look uninteresting compared to others

Do you know the true meaning of F.E.A.R.?

There is simply no better Star Wars experience than Jedi Outcast.

No video game has ever better captured the full feeling of being a lightsaber-weilding, blaster-toting, force-using badass.
The story is phenomenal, though it does take a little while to get going. Saber combat is fun, responsive, and stylish. The shooting mechanics are nicely polished as well, with a very nice array of blasters, repeaters, cannons, and others. Each is fun to use, have multiple different firing modes, The only problem? Once you get a hold of your lightsaber, you will never want to use anything else. For the most part, the game allows for it. While tons of games boast the ability to "play-how-you-want," this is one of the few that actually lives up to it. Wanna be a dirty little sniper and desintegrate Rodian thugs? Go for it. Wanna use the force to cast countless poor stormtroopers into perfectly-placed death-pits? Ain't nobody stopping you. Wanna just hack every single thing with two legs like it's a really messed-up version of fruit ninja? May the force be with you, you crazy fierfek.

Pros:
-Fun, responsive gameplay.
-Best lightsaber combat in the industry.
-Monstrous amounts of weapons, force powers, and items to collect and utilize.
-Surprisingly responsive AI (enemies will surrender, panic, feign retreat).
-Length single-player campaign.
-Excellent story set in the (sadly no-longer canon) expanded universe.
-Absolutely brilliant multiplayer (which is still somewhat active, but you can always just go it against bots).
-Cheats galore.
-Excellent music taken straight from the films.

Cons:
-Story campaign is a slow starter, some patience is needed.
-The Steam version has a few bugs and issues.
-Graphics are servicable, but somewhat lacking by today's standards.
-Some levels early on are truly difficult, they will test both you patience and skill (remember to quick save often).
-Multiplayer isn't super-active.
-No longer considered canon (which is a damn shame because this one is excellent).

I cannot recommend this game enough.

Play if you enjoy:

-Old-fashioned shooters with an irresponsible amount of weapons and ways to massacre your enemy
-Star Wars
-Third (or first) Person hack-and-slash gameplay
-Free use of force powers in every way you ever wanted
-A lengthy, story-rich singleplayer experience
-A very meaty challenge
-Offline with bots
-Fun

I cannot reccomend this game enough. As a horror fan, it's frightening. As a fan of a good story, it's engaging. As a fan of action, this game will challenge you. One of the first truly great survival horror titles of the last decade. And best of all, it's compelely free.

This game deserved to be played. So turn the lights off, plug in your headphones, lock yourself up inside your room, and then regret ever having stumbled upon this game. You're in for a treat.

Actually got this some 7/ish years ago by accident. and I can without any doubt or reservation in my mind say that this is my favorite thing to play on Steam. Take some of the greatest games of all time, on the greatest engine ever, and do whatever you want.
