I reserve longwinded, exhausting reviews for games that deserve them. This is one of them. I started out with pretty middling expectations-- I don't always like mysteries/crime games, I thought it was a point and click before playing, which I don't really like either, and I saw some things on Twitter that made my opinion sour a bit-- BUT... This game blew every and all expectations out of the water. You play as a husk of a man, haunted by his, well, own face, as well as his past of soon-to-be-revealed unrequited young love, alcoholism, and terrible fashion choices: Harrier Du Bois. Or Lieutenant Double Yefreitor Du Bois. Or Harry. Or Tequila Sunset. Or THE ♥♥♥♥ Mullen. Or, of course, the revered Raphael Ambrosius Costeau (no one will call him this, except for his inner thoughts). Joining him is Kim Katsuragi, lieutenant alongside Mr. Du Bois in the RCM (Revachol Citizens Militia)-- a man of conviction, small smiles, and effective sarcasm.

You start out and have to make a skill check (one of the harder ones in the game) to lose the ♥♥♥♥-eating grin plastered over your face. You don't remember your name. You have no ID badge. Your gun is missing. Who the *♥♥♥♥* are you? You gather your bearings and meet with Kim, unbeknownst to you, he is here to assist with the investigation regarding a hung mercenary found behind the Whirling-in-Rags. From here you have to use your perfect investigation skills to deduce just what happened to the man. Only problem is... the foul-mouthed children throwing rocks at the body have contaminated the scene, and the boy, Cuno, won't take any questioning from a *pig*.

That is the start of the game. There are many many many more hours to invest yourself in. What made the game so beautiful to me was not only the subtlety of revealing Harry's painful past slowly, but the small things that create the small problems/solutions reveals the final piece to the puzzle in such a beautifully pitiful way. The person you never suspected, never knew of, or even thought to be the culprit of the murder, is a racist, shell shocked, PTSD-ridden, dying nationalist who quite literally killed because he saw him having ♥♥♥ with another character you met. Not because of jealousy, but because he hated their action of reproduction. More people from the winning side of the war he never wanted to end procreating. That's it. The motive. The reason behind your entire investigation: an old, bitter man, dead set on his duty to his nation, killed out of said bitterness. It highlights just how dangerous even one person can be if given the right "reasoning". Just plain old evilness. You take him in, and depending on how well you deduced the culprit, Kim will give you a field performance rating, said in front of your colleagues, on whether or not you should be allowed back into the RCM. Potential sequels/DLC aside, this mundane ending (apart from if you spot the Insulidian Phasmid, which makes your reinduction into the RCM even easier), makes everything you worked for feel infinitely more spectacular than if it had been a mass murderer, or an evil supervillian. It's just... an old soldier with a broken rifle.

Sorry for the massive spoiler text, but I genuinely want anyone reading this to take the time to play this masterpiece. Be the good cop, be the sorry cop, be a naturalist, a *communist*, a.. racist, if you want? You shape the mold and what comes out of it in terms of who Harry is, all while uncovering who he was, who he is to be, who he let down and is to let down. (he's Tequila Sunset, it's gonna happen). Quit drinking, stay away from the stimulants, or drown yourself in booze and speed. Martinaise is your oyster, and while smelly and full of... communists... they're counting on you to find out who runs the world. There's also a two millimeter hole in the world, you should definitely figure that out. Could be catastrophic.

Play this game. It's a lovely little piece of political commentary, an artistic take on post-war living, and a gorgeous tale of heartbreak, tutti frutti chewing gum, alcoholism and dementia.

Aged man in edgy cargo pants and long sleeved shirt beats expats and women for his daughter who he thinks is dead but isn't really dead and also Grimm is one step away from her evolution into being a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ baddie in this game. Good game.

Listen, this game is a PILE of mid when it comes to everything. However, it's somehow one of the coziest games I've ever played. As seen by my 100+ hours. I'll boot this up to go to sleep. If I play it in the morning, it makes me want to go buy a motorcycle and explore. There is not a ton of rewarding exploration, but the map is MASSIVE and it does the whole "biker with issues" thing really well. Beat this at least once, but buy it on sale. If not for the gunplay, do it for the biker LARP.

I beat this game on Xbox when it first came out in 2018, over about two days filled with scumming my health and not leaving my room (unemployment was so sweet). I am now employed, thankfully. I still come back to this game. I've beaten it like four times to get all of the endings, and now I'm modding the game to get an even more diverse experience. Had my fair share of tears, anger, and adrenaline playing through it. I queue up the OST when I'm feeling it because the music is DAMN good. **♥♥♥♥** online, though. It's such a shame that GTA V is getting all of Rockstar's update attention still, because if they had done anything to improve the multiplayer, it wouldn't have died so quickly. ALSO-- Undead Nightmare 2 would have WIPED if they had released it, but of course, it was never planned. Absolute Rockstar L. Don't make that be the reason to not buy this game though. There are great RP servers, and you can sink a lot of hours into them. Everything else about this game is borderline perfection. Game runs super well on my 4060, and I am very glad it does because the environments carry the feel of the story throughout, and there are hundreds of beautiful areas to get lost in. Sound design is fantastic, gunplay is phenomenal, characters are some of the best in any story I've ever had the pleasure to experience, and the story itself draws you in. The only downfall I can think of is that, as referenced in NakeyJakey's 2018 documentary on the game, the gameplay is severely held back by the Rockstar game formula-- follow the path or fail, go to area, kill those guys, escort these guys, kill those guys-- completely negating the beauty of the open world. In between these missions, are some of the best moments in any Rockstar game released to date. Hunting, fishing, stranger missions, etc., it's a beautiful experience overall. But having that all be held back by the same tired, formulaic missions, puts a damper on actually moving the story forward. This by no means makes the story bad. It's just that having to actually go to missions, then ride back to the mission area, and do the same thing you've done twenty times REALLY makes it difficult to WANT to go do them. When it works, though, it works. Any of the holdout moments during the latter half of the game, where you defend your camp against troves of enemies, are well set up and feel very rewarding. Having to do four missions set up in the way referenced before to GET to those moments is painful. I still highly recommend experiencing it, if not for the story, but to simply follow the life and death of one of the best protagonists we've gotten in a very long time.

This game, once you find your flow, makes you feel like a legitimate badass. You are NOT invincible, by any means. Until later on in the game, if you don't take out the guys in front of you as fast as humanly possible, they're likely to swarm you and take you out. They balance this out by giving you optional armor pickups, and points where strategic shots will take out a group of enemies that will allow you to ease off and pick off the rest as you please. However, you're on a timer. At all times. This makes you feel like you need to go faster... and faster... until you hit that sweet sweet S rank. The music carries the flow of the combat in a way similar to that of Severed Steel and Neon White, and each song fits the feel of the situation perfectly. Especially the final mission, I Am Your Beast. Legitimately felt like I was in a zen state with how well the song makes you shift into a its flow, each headshot getting crispier and crispier as more and more grunts flowed in. There's a ??love interest??, there's a backstory that unfolds as you play, all the carnage is initiated in a John-Wick style of story that initially felt like a "oh, we're doin Wick again" moment, but actually feeling the hate Alphonse has and festers within him throughout the game gives the player a much more personal attachment to the reasoning behind his actions. This is a ~2-3 hour game that gives and takes, all within a complete, fulfilling narrative. Buy this game, babe.
