She's dead. It only took a little over a year. The thing that killed her was technically natural; a poison grown within her. That didn't stop it from feeling like an invasion. It all happened so fast, as these things often do. One moment she was taller than her mother, the next she was a lanky monster beginning to collapse under her own size. One moment she sang to the trees and the birds, the next, her voice withered away and she began to choke. Her life didn't end with a bang and a blaze of glory, nor an exhale and a circle of loved ones. It ended with panicked glances and shoulders drawing tighter still, with lengthening bones and a soul lost.

She's dead, and I'm what's left. She's dead, and I killed her.
