Spent over 2,000 hours on this game, yet it is still not boring. The player base however has changed over the years, as well as the game experience, but the TF2 team made the game environment safer for newcomers. When they introduced competitive, in the beginning it was not working as we expected. The queues took forever, the ranks system was unbalanced. Although they changed it later on (by introducing new ranks and a more stable connection), the majority of the community still sticks to playing casual.

We have to consider that this game is over 10 years old, it still has a big player base and the TF2 team is still working on new updates to keep us entertained.

Everyone should give this game a try, it will be worth it.
