This isn't the sort of "do you like suffering?" kind of game. It's a chillout game. It's slow, thoughtful and finding a jar of maple syrup might be the best part of your day.

I'm not someone who's been super invested in the quality of the game over it's many release so I don't have a good point of reference of whether this one is better or worse than the others. After nearly 300 hours in IE (with one short attempt at the themed campaign) I'd say it's pretty good. More content than I'll ever be able to play.

I'm really trying to find the fun but I'm really finding the game tedious. Most of the tedium is in the strategy layer but even in the missions as well.

Turns out with the right medicine (pressure stabilizer) you can leave the ship in just your underwear. I saluted that mad lad. He will be missed.

The game has really good shoot shoots and the bang bangs are also quite good.

Great combination of hack and slash combined with base building. The best parts of cutesy and horrifying.

Controller support is really bad. Clunky and the menus pale in comparison to keyboard menus. The game is thick and explains itself poorly. I have spent many a minute staring at the screen in combat unable to discern what effects are going on. There is a layer of knowledge you need to already have just to play the game and I don't have it.

"Darkest Dungeon is about making the best of a bad situation."

I think what this is trying to say is that you get some candles even when you lose but you can only progress when everything goes right. Even in a perfect run with all positive relationships and fully geared characters the boss can still wipe you if you get a couple misses on your turn. There's not making the most of a wipe on the final boss. You just have to do it again and hope that RNGesus is on your side.

Making the most of a bad situation means dealing with adversity and setbacks in an ongoing campaign. I believe this applied more to the first game. In DD2 the rogue-like design just means bashing your head at it over and over until you get the right run that results in finally beating the boss. There are no setbacks. Just start over.

The choose your own adventure stuff is opaque and means little. The missions are generally the same with little to change with tactics. Enemies are predictable. It's way to punishing to "live with your mistakes". Save scumming was necessary for me to enjoy the game.
