Early Access Review
It's like a more mobility-focused version of Ion Fury. It's got some Metroid-y "go back and look for secrets" stuff, too.

This one's for everyone saying that modern retro-style games are too "hand-holdy".

Still as addictive as the day it was released twenty years ago. And now that it's on Steam, with Workshop support for user-created levels and all, it's life-span just got a new lease.

Check out the Art Gallery as soon as you unlock it, that's a time capsule right there.

It's like Hexen, except the main character is an alien Conan the Barbarian.

It's a fun Paper Mario type game, and even if you don't get all the references

Any political messages perceived in the game are purely the fault of the player. The plot and characters are so absurdly cartoonish that anyone who takes them seriously needs to put down the Adderall. If you view the whole thing through the lens of developers inspired by Tarantino and other grindhouse schlock, it's not so intolerable. I'll grant you that the timing of the game in regards to Real World events was a little off, and that the kiddums today really believe they're living in this world, but that's just life, and shouldn't be points off for the game.

The gameplay itself is at least solid. It gets boring after the first few loops, but it's not glitchy. There's plenty to go back and hunt for after finishing the last mission, too. It kinda sucked that there's huge sequences that get handwaved by cutscenes (no 'Spaceport' level before the flight to Venus), or that you don't get to learn what Set's "doorknob" opens, but there you are.

It's just boring. Cutscene dialogue is awful, combat is super repetitive, sound and music are generic. I'm sure it looked better on 3DS, and that's probably what they were banking on. It's not buggy, it's functional. It's just empty.

It's a side-scrolling collect-a-thon game, basically. It's all Sega-style jumping on baddies and springs, plus some stuff pulled out of Mario 64, like a castle hub world, and levels to be played over and over to get all the things and beat it in all the ways to get more of the things.

Couple of bullpuke bosses, but it wouldn't be a nod to the 90's without them.

If you never played the OG, or even beat the OG a million years ago, this is worth the trip. It all looks great, not too many bugs, but no canned camper meals... :(
