If you are looking for a shiny looking tabletop rpg game in the style of classics such as Baldurs gate, you came to the right game. Strictly follows the 5e ruleset so for any players already familiar with that it will be a breeze to get used to. Other than that it offers the possibility to make your own areas, do multiplayer as of recently and may even surprise hardcore 5e players with its own relatively balanced homebrew subclasses.

As for the story, nothing amazing but it has its moments. What might surprise you more is that the tone and especially the commentary of the 'player characters' fits well in the typical irl tabletop game.

The positive:
-Excellent mod support so enjoy your full 5e roster of classes+multiclass up to lv20 (single class lv12 without mods)
-PC personalities and trained skills matter in different ways and accurately reflects how 5e works.
-Looks excellent for a new indie studio game
-Intuitive GUI and streamlined gameplay (spell radius, LoS, possible movement distance all immediately obvious)
-Lots of anti frustration features (perhaps a bit too much)

The negative:
-Unity engine might be a little buggy with animation cycles sometimes
-Encounter balance isn't always the best and the game is a bit too generous with handing out rests and gear (although you are free to just not make use of the resources)
-Faction impact could be better in main campaign (hugely improved in lost valley DLC)
-Having only 3 male and female voices means you're likely to hear the same voices for PC characters.

Overall, if you liked games like Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights, you're probably going to enjoy this one. It might not have all the fanfare that the big titles have but for an indie title it has a lot of that tabletop soul that you are actually looking for in the end.

For the complete experience, get both the original and the enemy within expansion.

Although I have personally not played the original game for MsDOS, this game has proven to be a very entertaining remake. From what I have seen, it remains faithful to the original source and includes many new elements that are refreshing to see.

The positive:
-As there are a multitude of tactics to go back and priorities can be mixed up every time, it is easily possible to replay the game whenever you want. Although the maps and some of the crucial missions will stay the same, base building, soldiers themselves and when you get which abductions or other missions changes all the time.
-The difficulty of the game is completely up to you. With 4 different difficulty levels that in between easy or normal vs classic or impossible have a huge difference in how the AI behaves and how cover helps out this is something that I feel is done tastefully. Additionally you can use second wave options to make the game even more challenging. Lastly, for those of you wishing the real thrill of the game, go for ironman mode in which savescumming is combatted.
-The combat is hugely centered around having knowledge and having strategy. From the beginning the odds are against you. The enemies start out with plasma weapons and amazing accuracy as well as mind control abilities. However, when carefully dealt with, you should be able to manage. Additionally, base building itself is a large term project in which you should weigh out how you are going to contruct the facilities to get the bonusses (which you so need on impossible) and when you are able to do so. The game is structured towards having you make critical decisions here.
-There is one particular mission in enemy within that really flips everything on it's head and is the hardest out there. For those of you reading this who have played it, you know which one it is. The key to winning here is to learn how to use the environment, making sacrifices and of course a healthy amount of luck.

The negative:
-While I respect the choice of going for RNG mechanics, the consequences can be rather dire. If you have your veteran soldier die on the field through a critical hit from a distance you have little chance of striking back and part of the squad panicking as a result, it might be over very soon. And while having your top squad die shouldn't be the game over there, you'll be struggling to catch up for the rest of the game. Luckily you have explosives.
-The difficulty of the game isn't linear. It starts out easy enough, then gets significantly harder all the way up towards the point where you almost have laser weapons (or should be having), which hits the hardest part of the game and then it becomes a breeze as soon as you have plasma weapons. The hardest mission in the game is definitely not the last one.

Otherwise, for anyone who likes strategy, I can recommend this game. A popular mod that is raved about on the internet is Long War and as it changes some core aspects of the game, I recommend checking it out as well.
