Huge departure for the series and I can definitely see why its been polarising. If you hate cutscenes, this is not the game for you realistically. If you don't mind cutscenes and a more cinematic approach to world building this game is absolutely fantastic. It has quickly become one of my favourites in the series.

The combat starts simple and does get more complex with a lot of options but you will not find DMC5 here, still more depth than most action games though. The game has some of the best boss fights cinematically and they really pulled from the FFXIV design philosophy regarding making cinema a part of the mechanics.

The story is captivating and memorable with a fantastic cast of characters and while at points predictable, it did a good job shaking up the narrative, youd think "oh this person obviously dies here" a lot but after a few wrong guesses, you'd kinda realise its not as predictable as it appears.

Side quests start as boring cookie cutter experiences but a lot of them are multiple parts that progress as the story does and bounces off the progress you make. I played every single side quest in the game and the final parts of the side quests where you have progressed the narrative and grown attached to a lot of the characters were really touching, not from a gameplay perspective mind you, from a narrative one.

DLC is great, The Rising Tide is home to some DLC BS boss fight mechanics at times but is again a beautiful narrative experience.

Echoes of the Fallen is home to one of the best boss fights potentially of the entire series (contentious, I know) if you go in at the right level though it is not an hour long ordeal like some uberbosses in other ff titles.

My main negative here is the performance, I have a pretty beefy computer and 1440p ultra left me with about 72fps, 96 with frame gen. I was able to play it fine (hence the gushing review) but people with low-tier performance PC's will not find an enjoyable experience (I tried on a second PC with a RX6600 and 1080p, FPS dipped to the 20's regularly and was not consistent) Cutscene fps unlocker and fps fix mods are semi-mandatory to make the game run and feel better on all rigs.

TLDR; Games a masterpiece, if you can run it and like cutscenes, if you cant or don't then avoid like the plague.
