The game has a distinct feel about it. It's clear the developers love certain games, such as the obvious ones like Dark Souls, but they didn't just use the mechanics from it. They were /inspired/ by it. They clearly know what they wanted out of the game they created and went full throttle into it. If you're willing to immerse yourself in a curious story, and understand that death is the point, then I can't recommend this game enough.

I'm never left feeling out of control of my own character. And with so many more options than prior, this is an amazing feat. Every death feels my fault, and every success is because of me. The game won't hold your hand, but it'll definitely make you feel like you're pulling yourself out of a grave with your own.

To also mention, the art is on another level. The vision desired and put forth is so clear. For a team of mainly two, it is incredible to see how much detail and love there is to every area of the game. And it's only emboldened by the music accompanied alongside it. I felt immersed almost immediately through these design choices alone.

There's so much more I could write about Death's Gambit, but one thing is for certain, it is made with so much soul, and love, and support from the developers (Especially if the expansion was entirely free after being developed for around a year or so). And you'll love every second of it, even as Death continues to berate you for failing.

This game really surprised me. I heard good things from other people, but it kept off my radar for quite a long time. I didn't touch it, hear much about it until later on, and felt like I could do without it.

But then I decided just to buy it on a whim.

I've easily fallen in love with the game. I've never liked games that make you die. That make sure you die. That tries it's damnest just to maim, torture, and kill you. But this game does it -right-

The whole basis of the game is less on that though, and more on the actual journey. The stage-by-stage dynamic in which you have to find a teleporter, and go to the next stage. It's all designed around this aspect. How do I mean?

There's a timer. The longer the timer goes, the harder it gets. So you must go through as fast as possible. But it can't be -that- simple, right? No. Of course not. The game's tender love and care is equal to that of an insane Buffalo Bill enjoying your flesh from above the hole. You have to get items in order to help you through the game. Enemies can drop them, but enemies will mostly give you money, and if you have enough, you can purchase them whilst running around the area.

So that's where the problem lies. Do you stay, farm enough for some more items for the challenge ahead? Or go through as fast as possible to keep the difficulty down? That's why it's so fun. This simple form expanded upon by the smallest things change the game entirely. What items you end up getting. How much time you have. What character you use to help you get through. And how much behind it all is included as well. From character unlocks, to different items the more challenges you do.

And that's what makes it great.

Not to mention the kickass design, and the beautiful atmospheric music. I couldn't help myself but actually -buy- the soundtrack on iTunes. I haven't heard a soundtrack this... Comfy. This beautiful in a certain way since Metroid Prime. The graphics are exactly how they need to be. Minimalist. It doesn't seem like it's pixel-art for the sake of "muh nostalgia" but for the sake of actually being how it should be. The artistic view of how the game should look and feel.

And that's why I love it. This game is definitely recommended.
