Scanner Sombre is in a lot of ways a one-trick pony, however that one trick is novel and beautiful, and worth the time and money to experience.

It does contain a very light storyline, however the focus is really on the visuals and the exploration. The level design is very well suited for the gameplay with some clever use of shadows in a game with no lighting, and overall it has a lot of Introversion's usual charm to it.

A wonderful collection of experimental game design ideas which should frankly be a reference work for students in the field, both for its hits and its misses. The fairies are adorable too.

The Technomancer feels like a budget Bioware game, in a good way.

The influence is clearly Mass Effect 1, with a collection of party members to find, recruit and get to know, however combat is melee-based like Jade Empire rather than a shooter. In combat, there are three classes to choose from which can be switched between with a press of a button and each feature distinct styles and pace. Unusually, right through the game enemies remain very lethal, and without liberal use of the dodge button you won't last long. Once you get used to the flow however you can take on a lot of opponents at once, somewhat like Arkham Asylum or Sleeping Dogs.

Character builds overall are very freeform, with the only limits being classic skill checks and gear requirements. There are also three types of stat gained through levelling up - fastest is the combat skill points, slower are non-combat skills like crafting and lockpicking, and slowest are core stats like health and attack power. XP gain is fast enough for constant character growth without getting overpowered, and it's generally pretty balanced.

The developers have also made good use of their environments - most areas you'll end up visiting multiple times, but there are enough of them that in the 25-hour runtime it doesn't get too repetitive. Despite the background story mandating that the cities are mainly underground, they've still managed to make them very different.

The story itself is passable - it's not something for the history books but it's enough to keep you playing to the conclusion and everybody's motives are generally pretty solid. The dialogue varies from characterful to a little creaky, though overall it's not too bad. Morality choices are a bit more Bioware than Obsidian but again decent.

For me, the only real negative is that it does feel like a budget game. Some of the polish and rounded edges you'd expect from a big publisher game aren't there, but on the other hand it's quite fairly priced.

Overall, The Technomancer is a pretty solid action RPG with some rough edges, but worth the time to play through.

I've never watched anime, I don't like the art style, the game has virtually no gameplay and the voice acting is entirely in a foreign language... but it's thoroughly brilliant and well recommended.

This is pretty much the pinnacle of story-driven games, in many areas. The 30-hour length allows for a lot of development of characters and exploration of consequences, while every single question that is raised in the entire timespan is answered somewhere, if you see all of the optional sequences. The writers have done a great job of creating a universe with time travel dynamics that are consistent and generally work out when thought through, then populating it with varied and well-written characters and using the time travel aspect to explore aspects of the characters that wouldn't normally be possible. It was so good that I spent another 30 hours going through a second time to see things I'd missed and the incredible extended ending (which is very much recommended).

My only gripes are a couple of rather cringeworthy moments and some slow pacing in the first half of the game, but after a certain plot point the train comes off the rails and there's 15-20 hours of gripping story until the end. There's also one side character who feels entirely like filler, but is more than made up for by the main character who's a jackass yet also the standout character of the whole game.

If you enjoy story-driven emotional rollercoaster games like Life Is Strange and Telltale's Walking Dead and don't mind dropping the puzzle aspect of them, then this is a 10/10 every time.

A quick summary: this is a very rudimentary release about a year of two of development away from being an actual game, and the store page hugely exaggerates the features on offer.

Driving: Initially in the only available starter car, the physics seem decent with a fairly natural if exaggerated feel to the drifting. However, as soon as you add power or change to another car it starts to fall apart, with bizarre spins, slides and acceleration in unexpected directions. It feels more like a set of predefined reactions to certain inputs rather than any actual physics simulation, and once you deviate from basic powerslides it breaks.

Graphics: The car models are serviceable if rather low-poly (ignoring the large holes in some), but the tracks are very, very basic - some games of the 1990s had more trackside detail. The 'traffic' only exists on one track, and seems to be mainly static cars with extremely low levels of detail.

Gameplay: The only gameplay loop that exists is that scoring drift points gives the player a small amount of money per point, which they can use to upgrade then score more points. There is no other gameplay at all.

UI: The menus are relatively clean and functional, however simply viewing any performance upgrade seems to immediately purchase it with no confirmation.

Audio: The sound effects are passable, the highlight being the turbo sounds. The music is not to my own tastes, but the production is at least okay.

Car culture: The choice of cars is well selected for a drifting game. While bodykits are only currently implemented for one car, and there are only 5 choices of wheels, the sheer presence of visual upgrades at least scores a point here. The engine swapping feature is also decent, although the stats for the engines generally bear very little resemblance to the real engines that they are named after.

Overall: The game frankly lacks even the most basic levels of polish or even gameplay, and has some jarring inconsistencies in the quality of the art assets. While the developers clearly have put some heart into it and are continuing to work on the game, I wouldn't recommend a purchase now unless it's 90% off and you're happy with 20 minutes or so of just toying around. Hopefully the support keeps coming, and in a year or two this may be worth the budget price.

Refunct is the essence of good level design distilled down into its purest form. Even as a first time player, the game needs no words or diagrams to explain its array of moves, as the evolving world nudges you toward situations where the solution is purely intuitive.

Despite the brief length, it feels like there's enough of an experience here to warrant the low price, and it's replayable just for the satisfying fluidity of motion alone, never mind speedruns and other self-imposed challenges. Well recommended for a peaceful short session or two.
