I've owned the standalone since launch after seeing something that reminded me of CS but looked a lot less "cool".

Insurgency plays as if it relishes its status as the antithesis of modern shooters. DLC is non-existent, they're known as "patches" (like they were 10 years ago!). There's no hit meter, hand holding or cool colours that draw your eye. The appeal from this game is in the bare, raw mechanics that make it an "ultrarealism" shooter. Think ARMA but possibly more accessible.

The game does a great job at bridging audience gaps between CS and ARMA (and RO2 even) whilst maintaining something that feels unique and unapologetically uncool.

I would recommend this game to anyone, and also pass on this friendly piece of advice to new players:

"DO NOT PICK THE SNIPER CLASS AND DO NOT VOTE FOR BUHRIZ PUSH, AND PLAY THE FRIGGIN POINTS"
