One thing the description apparently doesn't mention is, that you can also use your steam link for anything else on your computer (at least on windows, don't know about the others), not just games and videos via Steam. When you minimize Big Picture mode you have access to your desktop kind of like with RPD/VNC/TeamView just in a lot better quality and with sound via HDMI - so if you want to use you favorite video player or browser instead of the built-in ones, you can do that.
