nukes-view
Hi all, nukes here.

Fallout is a isometric, free roam, turn based (combat only), role playing game. I found to be a great game, although yes it is dated and hasn't aged well in graphical terms. The content and story I found great and enjoyed every minute.

Considering its release date of 1997, it still is overall a brilliant game, anyway let me explain myself.

The Game Play
Before you start on your journey you are able to create a character. With various options and choices related to a point based skill system, that is also commonly used in the later fallout games.

After character creation you are put in the shoes of a dweller of vault 13, sent out into the desolate wastelands save the vault.

Difficulty
The difficulty of the game is, let's say unforgiving if you are unprepared. I must admit I died quite a few times walking into places I didn't belong or starting fights with bigger stronger characters.

Hopefully you will find your demises just as funny as I found mine. (Save regularly)
In the options you can set the difficulty of the games combat system in your favour. I left this at a default state to enjoy the game as it was intended.

Controls & Interface
I cannot say I am a fan of the control system but for the age of the game I can see why the controls were done in this way. Although once you get the hang of them it become straight forward.

First of all they are a little hard to get use to as there is no definitive tutorial and is based on a left click and right click system with a hold function, the keyboard is not necessarily required.

The inventory system is simple and works well, although for future games I hope to see much more functionality. It uses a drag and drop system with hold click as well.

Achievements
This game has no steam achievements. Which I think increased my enjoyment of the game.

Story
The plot of the story I found to be great as it gets you stuck in straight away. By giving you a lengthy time limited quest to save the people of your vault right away gives you a sense of urgency. I found the main quests and side quests fun which kept me coming back for more.

The ending I found was very fitting and I hope anyone who plays through the game enjoys it as much as me.

Combat System
The combat is turn based, with each turn you have action points (AP) relating to how much agility you have including traits that can give you extra AP's for a turn. What you do in combat is up to you although everything will have a cost of AP you could if you fancy shoot your own allies or miss the enemy and accidently vaporise your ally.

Skills & Traits
Every time you level up you get to put points into certain skills and every three levels you can choose a trait, not counting the two you can choose on character creation.

I chose traits and skills on how I wanted to build my character some of them you will find useful and some you won't. Try saving before hand to test ones out. So you're not stuck with something you don't find useful.

Sounds & Effects
Due to the age of the game the sounds are still pretty decent and fitting for the wasteland environment.

Graphics
The graphics although dated for game that came out in 1997 are still pretty good, although trying to find items on the floor can be a little challenging.

Cut Scenes
The cut scenes, death scenes and endings are great, although dated now I still enjoyed them.

Humour & Trivia
I liked the games humour and spent a good few hours on the fandom wiki. I liked that Dogmeat is a reference to Madmax 2 which was completely unexpected.

Woof!

Game Utilities
Be careful the game does not offer a auto save function so any vault dweller must be extra careful before taking important actions. Whether it is stealing from or killing an innocent civilian or starting a fight with a super mutant.
You may end up quite dead.

Multiplayer
This game is single player only and does not contain any multiplayer. Although you can hire non player characters (NPC's) as mercenaries to follow you around on missions. Which is highly useful so long as you don't accidentally shoot them instead of your enemies.

Bugs - Important
Unfortunately fallout has a tendency to crash at random times which I presume is based on the fact it was not meant to run on newer versions of windows.

So vault dwellers I recommend you save regularly.

Also be wary of tabbing out, many have reported not being able to get back into the game although the game seems minimised.

This not necessarily true hover down in the left hand corner above the task bar and you will find an invisible box click it and should maximise fallout.

Conclusion
Overall I found this game very fun to play, par the minor crashes and issues with tabbing out. This game may be dated by modern game standards.

I personally think this is a fantastic game and hopefully never forgotten, if you ever have the chance to play and you have played any of the fallout games I strongly recommend you play this one.

Hope I helped.
