A truly fun foundation of a game, spoilt by a greedy, soulless monetization model and clear lack of respect for their fans and customers. The priority of implementation has been given to a cosmetic microtransaction store with a premium currency you have to buy in specifically sized bundles, that you spend on time-locked cosmetics to push you into FOMO purchases. This was prioritised over a fully-fledged and functional weapon crafting system

This coincides with sub-par performance even on high-end PCs, as well as frequent crashes.

And these issues persist in spite of both a series of closed beta tests and a "pre-order beta", which seems more and more to have been a "soft launch" of sorts. Though this was seemingly squandered and criticism passed off with "it'll be added at launch". The only thing added at launch was the MTX store.

So much could have been taken from the lessons of Vermintide 2, but for now I can only recommend picking this game up in 6-18 months, as I hope that by then FatShark will have realised their errors and correct course.

Unfortunately, in spite of my overwhelming hype, I am bitterly disappointed.

The fluidity of the physics in Boneworks seems to have fallen by the wayside, and instead getting a janky replacement that will regularly ping you off of an object with considerable speed. On top of this, simple QoL features, like enabling only physical crouching, and disabling tap sprint are noticeably missing.

Climbing, and gunplay both feel far less consistent than they were in Boneworks (rotating your feet onto a platform feels hit and miss, and the game seems to have a hard time knowing what you want to interact with, making speedy reloads that much harder. This, more than it's predecessor is first and foremost a tech demo. A series of challenges you complete with a story that takes a considerable backseat compared to the prior entry.

I'm disappointed. I know Stress Level Zero have put a lot into this game, and I have huge respect for them. But when you say you put so much into something, I'd hope to get a reasonable amount out of it.

In this state, I can't recommend it. Try again in 12-18 months.

I'd like to preface this with the fact that I consider myself a VR intermediate who's just fortunate to not get motion sick/simulation sick easily.

I initially bought Boneworks following my fantastic experience playing Half Life Alyx, as some claimed it had that "Half Life" vibe. Unfortunately I found that this game made me feel incredibly nauseous within 20 minutes or so. I refunded it, and actually came away very much disliking the game, finding it tedious with the janky physics and finding the melee combat weird.

A few months later, after dabbling with Blade and Sorcery and feeling comfortable with that, I gave it another go. First time playing it again, I felt a bit ill after 40 minutes. I tried it again, but tried disabling the joystick-controlled crouching, and that made a hell of a difference. I can now play for an hour or two, only stopping for body fatigue instead of sickness.

This game is a jack-of-all-trades. If something logically works, it'll likely work in Boneworks. You can play this game primarily as a shooter, as a melee-based game, or a mixture of both. Exploration of levels is very much incentivised and rewarded, and the secrets are so in-depth that I couldn't tell at times which was the main path and which was the side path. With the addition of modding, you can expand your arsenal, play as your favourite character from other franchises, and really engross yourself in the best sandbox I believe VR has to offer at this point in time. Adding to this, the fact that it has a lengthy campaign makes this an even more compelling purchase.

My previous criticisms of janky physics and melee combat turned out to be errors on my part. While VR physics certainly aren't perfect, if you let your head get used to them, and look around not as if the environment is a game, but as if it were real, you can get truly immersed. The melee combat follows a similar pattern, if you let yourself perceive items have the weight you'd expect (i.e. a sledgehammer being hefty to wield, especially with one hand), it enhances the experience tenfold.

I do recommend that people do come into this game expecting growing pains with it, and to very much pay attention to the VR expert warning. At least don't play over 2 hours if you're in doubt, and would like to refund it. But honestly, considering the amount of content, and the quality of that content, this game is fantastic. It's charming, thoroughly immersive, plays very smoothly, and is the strongest VR experience I've had without a doubt. Also, the soundtrack is full of bangers.

I really hope everyone with access to VR can play this and appreciate it, what a fantastic game.

After buying this game summer of 2020 for around £15, I was stunned that I'd waited so long on getting this game.

This game combines the gunplay, movement, and tone of The Last of Us (the first one, luckily), with a beautifully realised open world. The characters (and respective VAs) convey the defeated atmosphere fantastically, and the story has some unexpected, but very welcome twists. (Though the ending may leave something to be desired for some).

It is a joy to explore this world with such a fantastic main character as well as the side character, the bike. The bike is a character in itself, as you repair it, replace parts on it with better ones, and get used to how it handles and pull off more advanced maneuvers to deal with the growing threats in this freaker-infested world. The bike has such a weightiness to it, and makes getting around feel addictive. You look forward to riding it again. Quick travel is almost redundant in this game, and that is an achievement for any game.

The crafting system, though not wholly immersive, being able to craft molotovs and traps while sprinting from a horde five feet behind you, is intuitive. It allows for some interesting plays, and makes sure that momentum isn't halted just because a player may have underestimated a threat. If you can think on your feet, you'll survive.

It's a game that really benefits from cranking up the difficulty. Doing a first playthrough on Hard or Hard II gives you that feeling of truly being a survivor, and as you gain more tools, you can appreciate your power growing, and feel more prepared for the greater threats the game throws your way. With New Game +, Survival difficulty is well worth it. Stripping the HUD down and making you rely on those skills that you learnt in the first time round.

This is a game that was slept on by many at release due to the over-saturation of the zombie genre, and seeming to be another bleak, brown game.

This game deserves to be bought, this PC port has raised my expectations for these Sony games on Steam. It runs beautifully with native 21:9 support, and an unlocked framerate. It's optimised incredibly well with my just over an hour of playtime being stutter-free and easily reaching 90+ FPS on a 2080.

I heartily recommend this game to anyone who enjoys the zombie genre, or is even just looking for a good, grounded story.

Rock and stone!

This game is a true co-op experience. The procedural generation of each cave makes a huge difference to the gameplay.

Each class has a role, as well as a selection of weapons to support them.

This game is so clean and clear in it's design that it's a joy to pick up.

Continuous dev support, you can feel the love in this game. Check out their Discord and Reddit.
