Serious balance issues. Some characters are playing their own game and it's impossible to be competitive with the others. Party mode is filled with bots and not very fun. This game is a hard pass until they nerf Susano and Amaterasu.


Edit: Revisiting this review to say that the poor balancing and idiotic design choices from the devs have caused me to quit this game. I do not recommend it, though I wish I could. The idea of a 3d smash clone is appealing, but ping issues, balance issues, horrible map design, and weird dev choices make this game a pass. Only play this if you got it for free lol, it is not worth any money.

It's pretty fun but very simple. Not much room for diversity. gold stealing bandit is really annoying, doesn't feel like much options for builds. The guys who got to play before the update that limited spells and items look like they are having loads of fun. I envy them.

It's fun but it's very basic. Needs way more towers, more map layouts, more things to work towards. Thumbs up cause I like classic tower defenses.

Also, it's impossible to lose.
Back in W3 days, mapmakers knew that if they let you build during a wave, you could just block the end right before the mobs get out and open a hole on the other side of your maze, you can juggle mobs infinitely.
YOU CAN DO THAT HERE. There's nothing stopping you from juggling the mobs forever.

I don't know if that's developer oversight or actually intended. Either way, you literally can't lose if you know how to juggle, and with the mobs moving so slowly, it's not hard to do.

If you want my honest review, the raiding is really fun. Savage and Ultimate content is where it's at. Truly wonderful fights. Shame about all the story you have to push through if you want to do that stuff though. It's really hard to recommend this to new players. I wouldn't even try. If you DID get into it though, the endgame is very fun.

Initial review, I'll update when I get further into the game. My firs thoughts are that "wow this game is better than it has any right being". This really hit home for me once I reached the first town and saw how you could upgrade your augments, mod guns, upgrade your dog. I love all of that. So far the guns and gameplay is addictive, very fun. People who are having a hard time dealing with enemies are not using their abilities enough. There's no resource cost for most of them, so you need to be throwing those down on cooldown. Makes you feel like a god. I love the guns I've encountered, I love modifying them, and I love the environments I get to use them in. From a core gameplay perspective, this game is very fun.

I have issues with the movement, which is a shame because I really like all the tools for getting around. Wallrunning is cool, grapple is cool, double jump is cool.. but those mechanics feel stunted by weird design choices. Jumping off a wall is almost a frame-perfect trick and it's really hard to jump off walls without consuming your extra jump. Not a big issue but it contributes to the feeling that I don't get perfect control of my movement. Compounded by the issue people keep talking about where the grapple doesn't grab to lots of stuff. Speaking of grapple, it's not as bad at snapping to things as some of the reviewers would make you believe, you just learn really early on that you mostly need to hit ledges with it. It actually works really well almost all of the time.

The most problematic issue related to movement (for me) is the fact that crouch/slide/dash are BOUND TO THE SAME KEY! WHAT! This wouldn't be so bad if dashing wasn't the fastest way to get around on ground. Clearly they want you to use wall running mechanics instead of going fast on your own (combined with the idea that you get dodge chance increases while using all the fast-moving mechanics). That's all good, the game wants you to go fast. I want to go fast too. It's just so jarring that you can jump an inch off the ground and do a dash forward, but you cant dash forward if you are touching the ground. PLEASE let me bind crouch/slide to one key and dash to another. As it stands now, I just hate my life whenever slide kicks in instead of a dash in the heat of the moment. Made worse by the fact that sliding resets your aim and it never goes where you want it to. Kinda fine since they give you aim assist while you do that sort of thing but it shouldn't snap my camera, that's just weird.

IN SHORT, PLEASE LET ME BIND DASH TO A DIFFERENT KEY FROM CROUCH/SLIDE. THAT'S ALL I NEED. Everything else is gold.

It's fun but the balance is ass. There are way too many cards that are absolutely dead when you get them, seeing as the only build that's even remotely viable is stacking shield. There's too many things that if you don't get a good roll, the run is just dead in the first tier. There's so little you can do, as a player, to help control your run back into something fun. I know that this is a symptom of a roguelike, but this one gives you so few tools during a run to salvage bad rolls. I will recommend this because I like the concept and it can be fun, but the balance is very bad, there's so little you can do to control your fate in this game. The runs that go well are DEVASTATINGLY easy, since the right setup can have you stacking armor like a boss. I had a couple different runs like that, but I only ever win runs when I get some nasty synergy that lets you stack armor. Nothing else works.

A couple examples that might just be my experience, but:
If you don't get the +shield ability on your hero in the first ability selection, you will not win. Unless you get a minos to offset this lack of shield, the chip damage will end you before/at boss.
If you don't get a decent unit on your first ring (Minos blue or higher, or a stone gargoyle) you will absolutely die. The other units are useless on their own, they all need the support of minos + gargoyle. They might get you past the first boss but you will certainly not win with that setup. Oh you got ♥♥♥♥♥♥ doctor rolls on both your unit draws? Dead run. You'd be better off with a gray minos and a gray stone gargoyle than a double purple variant of ANY OTHER unit.
If you encounter the golem boss but the game didn't give you thin armor to strip its shield, you die. No matter what.

I like it but its rigid, needs A LOT of work, and more viable builds..

This game is fun, but absolutely requires friends to be fun (in my opinion). The core gameplay is actually quite slow, and that was a problem for me at first before I could get into it with friends. It was a little scary at first but that kind of turns into comedy in a group setting. I never felt truly terrified while playing this game, but I did get a couple great spooks out of it.

What I would love for this game is to go "off the rails" for horror. By that, I mean there needs to be waaay more unscripted horror events. The scares in this game come in a formula. Current formula: Explore house, find "the room", drop gear, wait for hunt, get "scare". MAYBE get a ghostly popup or two in the meantime. This game needs more little terrors that are outside the standard loop. Good examples would be: you turn around to leave a room and the ghost is at the door watching you, but it disappears when you see it. Maybe you see a shape in a window as you approach the house, or more spooky sounds while you're doing stuff. Most of all, this game needs more scary sounds. I don't mean it needs to rely on jumpscares, but if the ghosts were doing more spooky whispers and noises, I'd be way more on edge.

As far as a fun little ghost explore game to play with friends, this game absolutely nails its goal. It's fun and certainly has scary moments, especially when new to the game. The times I was scared was when I didn't know the map layout yet and didn't know where to go during hunts. As far as being a truly terrifying ghost game, it falls short for me.
