Early Access Review
Worth checking out, but don't get your hopes up for new content in a reasonable amount of time. Once you've played a handful of the maps, you've basically played them all.

Graphics, good.
Gameplay, decent.
Voice acting, what voice acting?
Music, what music?
Story, what story?

Devs are dragging their feet on character models and movement systems. Animations are clunky and comedic. Their refusal (and hostile response) to the modding community reduces on the customizability and replayability of the game. Phasmophobia could use the arrival of another gamemode to liven things up, otherwise I don't see myself returning just to ogle at the new thermometer model.

Personally, I feel that this is the best Frictional Games title so far. I have never played Rebirth and I've honestly heard mixed reviews on it so I wont be using it in this comparison. I walked into The Bunker remembering my childhood playing The Dark Descent. Its length contrasts to The Dark Descent quite a bit. The map is smaller, the story is shorter. This doesn't make it any less engaging. The endgame objectives are handed to you from the start and it is up to you, how you achieve them.

The Beast is dynamic and scary. You don't always know where it will come out and it could either be hunting you or possibly investigating a noise you made. The suspense was unparalleled by other Amnesia titles because in this case, The Beast is actually hunting you, following your blood trails and listening for your footsteps. It will find you more frequently then previous Amnesia monsters.

The graphics are very reminiscent of other Amnesia titles and made me feel right at home. The gameplay mechanics are very similar as well. The old-fashioned click-and-drag mechanics are all still there and you may occasionally find items tucked away in desk drawers. The frequency of which seems way toned down from past experiences. Maybe FG realized we don't explicitly love searching every desk in the game.

Playing this game, I received (just less than) 1 hour of playtime for every dollar I spent. I feel that this should be the bare minimum expected results on any difficulty. The fact that I almost reached 25 hours of play can be attributed to a handful deaths which genuinely scared me, and a bit of experimentation on my end. These experiences were particularly fun and thrilling for me, standing out from other horror games quite a bit.

I give this game a solid 7/10 and highly recommend it for horror and Amnesia fans alike. I've subtracted 3 points for the following reasons:

(-1) Animations would sometimes break (particularly on creatures' heads) and cause them to flail about madly, totally ruining the immersion. Additionally, the animations on my first-person view models would occasionally break entirely (most frequently when I pulled my flashlight) and cause my hands to flail about. This was my only major graphical complaint for the game and it didn't affect the game functionality at all.

(-1) The game's length is pretty short relative to other Amnesia titles. As mentioned previously, the map is smaller and the story is shorter. A good selling point is the game's cheaper price tag. $25 got me into this game and I feel like it was money well-spent. That being said, I was honestly hopeful the game would capture me for longer than it did on my first playthrough. On easier difficulties, I imagine that I would have spent significantly less time in the game and might have walked out feeling a bit disappointed.

(-1) I feel like HARD difficulty was not anywhere close to hard enough. It needs to be tweaked or an additional difficulty should be added for true punishment seekers. I feel that The Beast should truly have been a force to be reckoned with. If it comes to hunt you, the likelihood of it finding you should be quite high unless you can distract it well. I found myself not using glass bottles or "noisy" items at all throughout my whole playthrough. Even on HARD, there was simply little-to-no need to do so in lieu of carrying more important items like bandages or torches. I feel like my experience on HARD was pretty on par with that of a NORMAL playthrough. I was hoping for a quite challenging experience that would have kept me focused for longer than it did.

I am very excited for the fan-made custom content that will no doubt surface in the coming years. It will be a good reason to dust off this gem and play it some more!

The only game where a naked ree kid with a rock has attempted to bludgeon my face whilst loudly singing BABY SHARK into his microphone.

Banned for cheating years ago.

I wasn't cheating.

This game is still in my Steam library.

It's a disease to my Steam library.

I want it out of my Steam library.

Okay, so. This game is still receiving updates even though it isn't Early Access any longer. As far as a full game goes, it's not the best experience in the world, but I would pay $5 for it. Fortunately for me, I got it on sale day before yesterday for $2.49.

I spent a few short hours in this game before I had been given the peak experience of the game. You play as a scientist in the mountain forests. There's wild boars and deer wandering around the map to add some life to the world. Although, they don't do much. The boars may wander into a trap at your camp which will allow you to place a camera on their heads to track their movements while they wander around the woods.

You can place up to 5 cameras in the woods, equipped with moton sensors to track the movements of both wildlife and The Rake within view. This is nice, but watching cameras can be almost unbearably annoying at times due to the amount of "flickering" the cameras do. It's like an older VCR effect where the screen has some horizontal splicing. If it happened less often, I would be much happier with the camera system.

The Rake was creepy enough for the first few hours and he has a tendency of sneaking up on me, which provided some mild jumpscares. However, what I've seen of his AI turned out to seem a little bland. The Rake seems to wander the woods idly until he spots a reason to come after you or run away. I was able to find a deer stand overlooking an open swamp. It was there, I waited for two nights with my shotgun and sniper rifle. The Rake would wander aimlessly into the open where I would shoot him and he would either run away or sprint towrds me until I shot him a second time. Every time I did this, within two minutes, he would come back for more.

Deer Stands are a nifty feature, providing the player "Invisibility" to The Rake's eyesight. However, I'm not sure how The Rake interacts with players while they are within the safety of a deer stand. I don't know if I'm ever going to see The Rake while I'm in a deer stand because I don't know if he walks in my direction while I'm standing in one. Making it almost frustrating to stand in one and wait for him.

You have the ability to pick up animal feed and traps in the world. You can access them in your inventory and place them on the ground for an added "hunting" effect. However, these features seem rather unpolished, ad boars will completely ignore the feed and I've yet to see The Rake go after any of my animal feed piles. Once I get The Rake to walk over one of my traps, I will deem my experience with Rake complete.

Should you pay $5 for this game? I'd say it's up to you. Different people may receive different experiences with the game depending on how they play, so the game could not be worth the $5, while others will find it worth more than $5. I would say, as far as $5 goes, it's worth the experience, as short lived as it is, because this game is multiplayer and is still being updated. Who knows what will change in the future? I've provided a list of pros and cons I experienced while playing this game. Features I liked, versus qualms I had with existing features of the game. I won't include features that aren't included because they may not be in the game for good reason. (Jumping, crouching, etc.)

===Pros===
-The ability to view cameras and track the movements nearby your camp without actually going outside.
-Cameras detect motion, so the buttons on your screen will turn red when something enters view.
-You can place traps and feed down to "attract" animals and The Rake.
-The binoculars and sniper scope are well-made and, when used with your flashlight, can be used with a sort of night vision effect.
-The Game has good atmosphere, with an array of wildlife and ambiance scattered throughout the woods.
-The jumpscares are enjoyable. Not too obvious, not too weak.
-The game escalates well over 3 days as The Rake gets progressively more aggressive each night.

===Cons===
-Camera screens flicker so much, it makes them very annoying to watch. If you can decipher what you're looking at, it still makes it very hard to see.
-The motion sensors on the camera are very sensitive. They were picking up things that were very far away from view or that I couldn't see at all.
-The animal feed doesn't seem to work as advertised, as far as my experience has shown.
-With animal feed not seeming to work, traps may very well be utterly useless as they are right now.
-The Rake AI seems to wanter aimlessly, seeking out any excuse to attack the player. It's as though his soul reason for existing is to scrape your knees, judging by the amount of damage he does.
-The Rake does a very little amount of damage to the player. This made my experience wear thin very quickly. I was no longer scared of The Rake before too long.
-The Rake has an absurdly large health pool. I had first aid kids and enough shotgun shells to blow up the moon. I don't think it would have been enough to kill The Rake over the course of 3 nights.
-Boar AI seems rather .... dim. I would trap a boar, scare him away, and he'd follow the same path into my tent and right back into the trap every time.
-In the back of the map, where the Sniper Rifle is located, there's a boat located there in the swamp. It has no collision model and I can walk right through it. This can break immersion very quickly.

That's all I have for now, but as future updates come out, I may change my opinions. Is this game worth your time? for $5, I'd say so.

As far as a beta goes, this game passes any tests with flying colors. It is incredibly well-made and plays smoothly. As far as it plays right now, it could use a little balancing. In the future, I would like to see unit balancing so players can't spam striders or machine guns and win that way.
