Vertiginous is a game that really pushes the envelope on the concept of "necessary." Like is it necessary for the game's main menue to be delivered via walking first person through several shops? Debatable. But get ready to strap yourself in for that experience.
Or would it be necessary to have fully customizable character outfits when the only time your character is visible is the several seconds you spend in an electric chair before you start golfing? Probably not, but you better believe they rendered it!
And is it really necessary, when the experience your game offers is a round of pitch and putt, to have an entire backstory about a class struggle that is slightly more complex (and well thought out) than the one in Bioshock Infinite? Doubtful... still, it is included.

So is all of this necessary for a game of mini golf?

No.

But it's there anyway, and that's value ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!
