You play as a pilot that automatically orbits and shoots the boss, while the gameplay revolves around changing speed/direction of movement with your one button of choice. Not pressing the button gradually increases your movement speed and damage, which creates an interesting risk/reward dynamic. If you get hit by stuff three times, it’s game over. Pretty simple, yet effective design. To spice it all up, there are upgrades available, split into three categories (movement, weapon, utility) that automatically unlock with progress in any game mode (I wouldn’t mind if unlocks were a bit faster to give some more options during the early and mid-campaign).

Speaking of the campaign, every chapter starts with a few levels that introduce new attack patterns that you will face in the boss fight at the end of the section. Interestingly, boss fights are a best of X format, with each of the battles offering a different design of the arena(s) (orbit route) and attack pattern sequences. What that means is that if you ever get stuck on a specific fight, you can still progress by completing one (or more) of the alternative versions for that boss that might suit your build/playstyle better. Difficulty progression feels good and there was a lot of effort made for boss designs. There is a light corpo-themed background story with some robot humor that ties everything together. The length of the campaign will mostly depend on your skill level, but I’d say it will take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours to complete.

The whole vibe is really cute, the art is simplistic and well done. Later fights sometimes get a bit hectic when the screen becomes more clustered, although some colour palettes definitely provide better readability (there are a lot of them; I was just going with the latest unlock that is assigned automatically for my playthrough). Enemy actions also have audio cues which help with that. I would definitely recommend playing with sound as the soundtrack is good as well.

A rift (roguelike) mode where you progress through randomly generated floors is also available. Similar to Slay the Spire you choose your own progression path and upgrades after each completed fight. I only played a few runs so far, but it looks like the upgrades are diverse and depend on your base build of choice. This mode should provide a lot of end game content and challenges in addition to speed running campaign bosses for best grades.

TL;DR: Inventive game design and good application of a one-button control scheme. Can be played in short sessions. Recommended for everyone who likes challenging rhythm games.
