I'm not a huge reviewer so it takes something special to make me want to really get a word in edge ways. I'm someone who usually sticks to what I know, I love first person shooters and the occasional story driven game, but this caught my eye because of the fun character design, unapologetically over the top movement mechanics and clearly being very charming - The vision of a small team making the best game they can and just doing whatever they want with it.
So I've had a blast, i'm not even finished with the demo and I'm already busting for more. Here are a few of my personal insights.
. I've read that people's biggest gripe with this is 'the walk of shame' after falling off a puzzle is way too unforgiving - Hmmmm, yes, I guess... But in my opinion the game doesn't make this frustrating for me at all and I'll explain why this actually makes me want to keep trying and trying. The game's mechanics are the same for everyone - The controls are so super tight and consistent - I know if I make a mistake, that's on me and not some faulty glitch. The game is trying to teach you something. I spent about 20 minutes on a particularly hard section, when I fell off later down the line and had to redo the tough section again, I was dreading it - But I absolutely blitzed through it, something I struggled with earlier with no issues at all, guess what! The game had taught me how to do it, it had showed me the mechanics of the game, the specifics of this particular section and I had an easy avenue to just try try try and try again, the 'walk of shame' was fun in itself because I could it as an opportunity to experiment with movement on my way back up. Please devs, don't listen to the really harsh criticism regarding this - I feel like tenacity it's a key part of the game's identity and you handle it so incredibly. The fishing rod check points are a great way to mitigate frustration as it is.
. The game is really tricky, it's not for everyone (especially children - I really don't think a child would be able to get anywhere at all to be honest), I think it will remain firmly at very positive reviews because this game is for particularly inquisitive people with a lot of patience. One may prefer games with combat or more objective puzzle solving, this wont be the game for you - I think trying to please everyone would be a terrible idea.
. MORE ENEMIES! On the subject of combat - This is my only gripe - Almost no challenge is presented by enemies at all, the game's difficulty and nuance comes from the movement but I really do feel like enemies with cool quirky designs could be implemented a lot more often - I love the great big tall ostrich things that shoot rockets, but it's too easy to beat and I feel like you should be forced to use the sand worms mechanic to avoid the damage or something. Otherwise a nice variety of enemies that use the movement mechanics in order to beat would be incredible, like an enemy you had to climb on top of to beat.
. I love the visual presentation, I adore the character designs of the main heroes and a modern interpretation of the old school visual style, I'd be interested to see a little bit more dialogue and funny moments, but to be honest - I've been fine without it so far.
This is a game that will make you feel like you're fantastic, it has had me grinning ear to ear and audibly saying some celebratory quip after doing something cool. It's a game that makes you experiment and use otherwise basic mechanics in a unique way - It doesn't hold hands and makes you have to really think about your movement, but the game still has incredible quality of life implementations, such as a health system that only puts you a few metres away from your starting point when you lose all your hp, and bottomless pits that let you try again immediately if you fail. You're free to go and explore in any way you wish and I am really really excited to see the full game. Devs - Please stay on this direction! Especially with the unforgiving sections. I wish you all the success imaginable.

I played the open beta for this and I was genuinely sad when it was gone for a month. Whatever balancing concerns there were have been sorted and the game is one of the best shooters I know. It's going to be on my repertoire for years to come.

Of course on full release a new batch of balancing concerns arise, invisibility effect is a bit too strong, barely anyone plays heavy because it 'Isn't as much fun', I haven't seen anyone using about a quarter of the weapons in the game at all - Such as the dagger etc etc.

If everything is OP then nothing is OP I don't think anything is outrageously broken or anything, I think the only concern with the game for me is that it encourages you to play really dirty and employ 'Winning' tactics instead of enjoying the game and getting the fun out of it - Use whatever it takes to one up your opponent instead of experimenting or trying new strategies.

Yes there's absolutely nothing without a counter, but I like to use weapons I think are fun to mess about with. I don't want to use the rifle with 40 bullets in with barely any recoil to worry about, I'm gonna use the revolver that just has 6 shots meaning you have to get really creative with how you use it. Maybe I like being the underdog, but I feel punished for trying the more unusual weapons when I could just have a really easy to use gun that just kills stuff for me, but I don't find that fun at all.

In reality I'd do much better just playing it safe with the easy to use items. Most people have clocked on to this and I feel it's especially important if you're the only player of your class on a 3 person team.

To be honest the game encourages experimentation with their array of very different unique weapons, which is fantastic, but I don't see it too much in other players. Despite the game being balanced well I get killed by the same select few weapons/gadgets each time.

I still recommend the game though, very much. I trust the devs and I've agreed with every patch and balance change they've done so far.

But this game needs to force people away from the 'safe' options - Get people doing crazy ♥♥♥♥, get them out of their comfort zone and keep the game fresh. And for god's sake let people switch weapons in tournament mode - This is the #1 culprit.
