helldivers 2: escalation of boredom

arrowhead studios have taken one of the most knock down, drag out successes in the history of online gaming and turned it into a stale, poorly balanced mess of an experience where the developers routinely and actively punish players and work to make the game less fun and accessible in the name of some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ concept of 'balance' informed by the collective psychosis game developers have seemingly been suffering since esports and livestreaming became the forefront of gaming content in the mid-late 2010s.

A game about broken people in a broken world, for broken people in a broken world. Beautiful, heart-wrenching and so damn impactful.

Max out Shivers for the best experience.

A great game which was once my personally most anticipated game, and which is now one of my favorites despite all the baggage it came with and is still offloading.

I remember my friend telling me about the reveal trailer from 2013 at lunch in the sixth grade, and I immediately went home and watched it on the clunky old home PC. I quietly and excitedly awaited the game since as I went through life. I was entering my junior year by the time the next trailer and the first real in-game footage was out, and finishing high school when we got a concrete release date. By the time I was actually sitting down to play the game I had wanted since middle school, I was working an office job as I waited to return to school after the end of the pandemic.

It's two years old now, and it was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful at launch. Maybe it was sixth grade me's lingering hopes, but I somehow managed to fall in love with the game despite that. And in its current state I love it all the more. I've worn the game thin on subsequent playthroughs but still find myself coming back to it. CDPR do Mike Pondsmith and RTG's amazing setting justice, and the narrative and worldbuilding elevate an otherwise just okay RPG into a great one I keep coming back to. There's still a lot of flaws; the combat feels spongy and unsatisfying at low levels and starts to end too quickly at higher levels, which kind of makes character building feel pointless. It still has its' fair share of glitches, and there are so mayn features promised that remain absent or incomplete. But what's there is worth it regardless.
