The base speed of the game is very slow. General Laborers won't automatically build anything for you unless you turn them into Builders. Workers will often not work and instead visit other people in the town, or perform tasks not assigned to them. Farms, ranches and orchards are useless unless you trade with a merchant for livestock and seeds. This sense of realism may be what others look for in a game, but I became more and more frustrated as I built up structures only to have them sit useless because I didn't know the nuances of set up.
