"Like the protected books, plays, and movies that preceded them, video games communicate ideas -- and even social messages -- through many familiar literary devices (such as characters, dialogue, plot, and music) and through features distinctive to the medium (such as the player's interaction with the virtual world). That suffices to confer First Amendment protection."

FPP - First Person Perspective
FPS - First Person Shooter
Doom clone - term that was used from '92 to '96 (release of Quake) that means the same as FPS, just doom was so groundbreaking that every other fps game was compared to it.
All of FPS are FPP, but not all FPP are FPS. The alternative being third-person perspective -- or TPP -- which, technically speaking, should include any game where you're looking at the character you're controlling from the outside, but which, in practice, is usually used to describe games with an over-the-shoulder "follow cam" (as opposed to "isometric", top-down, side-view, and probably others).
So if you want to be specific use FPS, if for example you want to talk about System Shock or Deus Ex use FPP as they're mix of FPS and RPG. And all games that came after doom and before quake can be called doom clones (heretic, hexen, duke nukem 3d, shadow warrior e.t.c.)
There's also a subgenre of FPP that contains vehicular combat (i.e. descent series) that some consider to be FPS and some do not so in this case it's safer to use FPP.
