Really wish the dev had seen that meta progression was the key to how many hours most of us sunk into the game. They've gone for a different approach with this one where there are no longer dice rolls in dialogue stat checks, and instead it's just a set "pass" value that can be affected by morale and fatigue + your own skill.

I love the first game for the setting and the storytelling, and that's present in this one, but it's let down by the above, and the (imo) clunky cohort combat system.

1v1 duels are satisfying and fun in the first game, and can be in this one, but the cohort combat system is a bit of a mess. The several different stats that appear to matter (cohesion, front, clash capacity, determination, morale) are not obvious, nor is it obvious what is causing these to go up or down. The fact you gain imbalance from holding fast against an assault feels very detrimental, as you can hold the line trying not to lose determination, but by the time you want to counter attack you're already +5 imbalance. Then you get locked into +2 imbalance for 2 rounds if you want to push? There's not a lot of room for a player to have agency.

Also you now have a chance for a duel to occur when two sides clash, and you have to fight them. Every single one.... Including ones using your legionaries, which you're not able to influence the stats or fatigue of the same way as you are yourself. These become *incredibly* tedious, the amount of these that occur per clash needs to be turned down or made into an AI vs AI battle.

Realistically I do recommend this for £8, but it just doesn't hit the same level as LL did

Combat system is much worse than the first one regardless of difficulty, just a lot of bs thrown in without testing to get the game out

Game feels half baked, a lot of the hand positions on guns/item activation and gameplay feels janky.

The graphics are middling at the best of times, and there's a few occasions where they're just downright source engine tier.

Wait for a sale or see if they do a proper fix for PCVR.

Got into a game and the first person near me is a Chinese man who appears to be a floating head.

We went on many adventures, until the game caused him to lag into a bunch of enemies and he was swarmed instantly.

Gameplay is fun and solid (theoretically), but the netcode is very janky - can't clearly see where you're hitting zombies in melee or ranged, zombie brains appear to float above their bodies and zombies themselves will virtual insanity their way towards you through the terrain. There's a lovely glitch where a redeye zombie blown up by a pipebomb becomes invincible.

On top of this, the inventory is no longer weight/slot based, it's just a one item one slot basis, meaning you can become John Rambo with just guns, ammo and medkits. Why deviate from what made the previous game so popular?

The unfortunate fact is that I should never be playing with the Chinese, and the fact that the game hasn't done matchmaking by region is probably causing a lot of issues, alongside the blatant gameplay issues.

I can't recommend it at this time.

I already linked my psn account at the start anyway, but cool that they actually listened to the players

After this update I can say for sure, they've cooked

Beautiful indie game, already lots of fun so far.

Frostpunk but medieval.

Just an addition after a few months of being out, the main dev is very communicative about what's coming, releases hotfixes very quickly and has a great pace for updates and the beta tests.

You should absolutely support him and this great game, if not just to show the rest how it should be done.

As close to perfect as a game gets, excellent story telling, historical accuracy and fun gameplay.

Infinitely re-playable, the game could be priced triple what it is now and it'd still be a steal.

10/10

Currently a city builder, don't waste your money until politics, diplomacy, war and anything to do with how history actually went down is fixed.

And it's only a good city builder if you like building every tiny thing yourself, with micromanagement of your import/exports, no automated expansion of buildings, and a government of your choosing because politics don't matter.

The UI also sucks horse c**k, and the lenses make the game objectively harder and more frustrating - if you've got lots of hours in CK2/3, HOI4 or EU4, you're going to want to commit within an hour of using it.

Game clearly wasn't played by the devs, and if it was, then this is malicious, as they knew what they were ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ out.

This sort of thing will likely be fixed in the first DLC, but why waste £40 on something you're just going to need to spend another £30 to fix later on when you could just buy another game for way cheaper that isn't half-baked and shat out by studio execs?
