I'd buy another game about this family. The writing was hilarious and the actors are superb.

If Grandpa is so old he's getting lost in the department store, there's no way he's making up this many sidequests with so much detail on the fly.

For the first time I'm wishing Steam gave a kind of "mixed feelings" review as opposed to a strict thumbs up/thumbs down. Since this is what I've got to work with, I'll go ahead and recommend it... with some reservation.

Let's get the negative out of the way. This isn't a novel. The characters do not interact in a way that feels natural by any stretch of the imagination. Every scene just piles on more and more information about VTubing. I felt like there was going to be a test at the end of each chapter, i.e. "Name three challenges a VTuber must overcome in their first year."

Other themes are not lost on me, such as overcoming self-doubt, learning to love yourself, finding the strength to lean on and support one another. This was overshadowed by the fact that VTubing played a role in every solution to every obstacle that came up. But hey, that's what the story is all about.

In terms of characters, I know nothing about the ML except he's a twink with glasses who watches VTubers and the FL is a cute emo goth girl who is a VTuber (which isn't a spoiler because it's obvious five seconds after her introduction). There's a minor third character who could honestly be removed and the story would not suffer in the slightest.

HOWEVER...

This VN wasn't written to tell a cute romance story with a self-insert protagonist. It was written to shine a light on VTubing itself, to show both the positive and negative aspects about the medium as well as what artists (and fans) go through to find success. It does that well, if a bit awkwardly. I learned a lot myself, and I enjoyed getting a look at things from an artist's perspective. A lot of time was spent to make sure that we, the readers, could get an honest look at VTubing. It shows.

This review probably sounds a little more critical than other positive reviews. If you couldn't tell, I have mixed feelings about the story. But take another look at the game's description. This was created to be a love letter to VTubers, one made to embrace every aspect of it. Verum succeeds in doing that.

If you've taken a look at other reviews, you'll see this game is almost universally loved. And don't get me wrong, there are plenty of things to love about it. It takes a unique approach to puzzle games and with over 200 levels, even experts will find a challenge. Combine that with the fact that the rules are easy to learn, and you are encouraged to break them as soon as you learn them, and Baba Is You has all the markings of a fun, novel puzzle game. So why the thumbs-down? Because the novelty quickly wears off.

A lot of people, whether they love it or hate it, will talk about how the game is deceptively hard. Take a quick glance around the community hub and you'll see testaments of players spending days (literal days) on a single level. Whether or not this appeals to you is entirely subjective, but it is worth noting.

My main issue is that Baba Is You is presented as a game where you can break all the rules, but it soon becomes apparent that you are breaking only the rules that the developer wants you to break. This doesn't lead to creative, unique solutions to the puzzles. It leads to one single solution for any given puzzle, a sequence so complex and restrictive that if you do not follow each step to the letter you will not beat the level.

What this means is that you don't have a game that capitalizes on some wild new concept, you have a game that plays like every other puzzle game on the market.

The staff room reminded me of my old Geocities website, which filled me with both wonderful nostalgia and great shame.

This game offers a variety of puzzles, a variety of spells and equipment, and as promised, a truly "bloody" ending. There are also a lot of light-hearted moments to balance things out. I really enjoyed the story and how small moments were tied together at the end. I highly recommend it, and I look forward to seeing what else the developer has to offer in the future.

About a quarter of the way in the game turns into one giant flashback without explaining any of the main themes presented beforehand. I lost interest when it tried to garner sympathy for
a serial killer.
