The combat is great—probably one of the best in the MMO genre. The Legion Raids are fun and very mechanic-heavy, which makes them a great challenge that you really have to prepare for and study for.

But getting to actually play those raids is where all the problems lie.

TLDR: Don't play the game if you don't have a static group to play with. You will never catch up to veterans and will be gatekept for most parties in the Party Finder.

The progression systems

All the old content, even raids released last year, is basically dead. There's close to no one leveling through the story, doing low-level dungeons, or killing low-level bosses. Everyone says that the game starts at level 50, and even the developers and the publisher acknowledge this by distributing "Powerpasses" to new players in events. Those powerpasses let you skip most of the story and put you at level 50.

Now that the player is level 50, they need to progress into the late game so they can do the most recent raids, the ones that have the most players. There are so many systems in Lost Ark that it is difficult to list them all, but here are the main ones.

  • Honing : You can hone your weapon and armor pieces; this will increase your "Item Level (iLvL)," which is separated from your level. Honing is RNG-based and has a pity system, but the difference in cost between getting an upgrade on the first try and pitying is insane. Be prepared to spend a lot of materials here. (Upgrade stones, honor shards, silver, and gold.) The cost goes exponentially higher when upgrading to higher levels.
  • Quality : Each piece of armor and the weapon have a quality that goes from 0-100. You can upgrade the quality by using chaos stones and gold. Higher quality will grant you more resistance and a higher damage output. The chance of getting an upgrade is lower for higher qualities, and there is no pity system, so you can spend all the resources you'll ever get and never reach 100 quality.
  • Engravings : Engravings are special effects that modify certain abilities or characteristics of a character. There are normal engravings and negative engravings. Engravings can be found on accessories or ability stones that drop on dungeons and raids. The engraving combination that comes with the accessories is completely RNG-based, so most of the time, you will be buying accessories from the market, making it almost impossible to have a SSF (solo self-found) experience in Lost Ark.
  • Cards: You can collect and upgrade cards that you get by opening card packs (a system that has many layers of RNG). To upgrade a card to the maximum level, you need 15 copies of that card. To equip the best card set in the game (Light of Salvation), you need to upgrade six legendary cards to max level (90 cards). There have been people playing the game since the western launch and still don't have LOS30 (Light of Salvation) maxed out.
  • Other systems: With newer raids being introduced, the developers are constantly implementing newer progression systems (Elixirs, gear transcendence, advanced honing). All of them are RNG-based.

The Gatekeeping

With so many progressions and the game incentivizing the player to have many characters (most of the content has a daily or weekly lockout by character), the remanaing playerbase wants to go through all the chores as fast as possible, which means that they'll only accept those who have a near-perfect build and high level into their groups. If you are a new player, you have to go out of your way through other means (discord, etc.) to be able to find a group.

The economy

South American servers are dead. They don't have regional pricing, and the developers and publisher don't do anything to manage the economy.
