Very fun. Definitely cribbing heavily on Spire, but with its own unique twists - including the marquee mechanic, The One Die that lets you change any visible numerical value on screen. Classes don't feel super balanced, some are definitely better than others, but in general the game feels easier than other deckbuilding roguelikes I've played - in large part due to said marquee mechanic, but also just in the card balance. Still working my way up through the ascensions, and unfortunately it does do the same as Spire in each class having separately tracked ascension levels, which makes getting through them a bit of a slog. Still, it's a lot of fun

Plays well on Deck, but doesn't have any controller binds so it's purely trackpad mouse and mouse clicks, though I've been able to rig some janky binds using Steam Input to move the cursor and click. The font in some parts is also a bit small on the Deck's screen (I find it difficult to parse the dice symbols in card text).

There's such a huge variety of gems here, it's like a box of 50 little chocolates. Some might be fine, some might taste weird, but you might just fall in love with some of these retro delights. Will it be the bag-builder? The 4X game? One of the many funky platformers, or maybe the hard-as-nails metroidvania? There's so much to explore, and so much to love

Played a few of the beta tests and had an absolute blast - campaign takes around 15 hours in total or so, but I definitely logged more replaying scenes, going for bonuses, etc. The gameplay's great, it leans more tactics than strategy (puzzly like Into the Breach rather than XCOM), and the dialogue is just stellar. Genuine laugh out loud moments, and yet there's still space for emotion and humanity in the storytelling. Really, really good ♥♥♥♥

I can wholeheartedly recommend this game if you, too, have hyperfixated on Slay the Spire.

The game feels like it has tons of content (I haven't even unlocked the hidden character or endgame yet) and while it bears a lot of similarity with Spire, it largely feels novel in a good way - not just different for the sake of being different. The dual-damage and virtue system felt very fun to play with, and my brain already itches at the thought of possible infinites. There's even a character who's whole gimmick is storming off! The tools you're given to control variance are very interesting, and each character seems like it's quite deep and invites multiple playstyles. It does struggles a bit with information overload, with the sheer amount of keywords and icons you're exposed to, but slowly the iconography starts to be helpful rather than overwhelming and it does seem to drip-feed in new keywords as you complete runs (through the leveling system) which helps a lot.

The art is also just gorgeous. I love the character designs and overall enjoy the aesthetic that the game has gone for. That's nowhere near the most important thing (just look at Spire) but it certainly doesn't hurt. I'm also a really big fan of the UI being stylish and thematic without ever getting in your way. My only complaint is that I wish there was a numerical count of your Purification bar sometime, as I've managed to miscount segments so many times already, but the bar layout does make a ton of sense with the Virtues. The soundtrack is inoffensive - nothing special, but pleasant on the ears and not something you'll grow weary of after hours of gameplay.

Storybook Brawl has now been bought by FTX (crypto trading exchange). LSV has mentioned explicitly they will be exploring "non-cosmetic angles". So, no thanks, I'm out
