so first of all great Q. the afghanistan war was a very complex action and as a pretty wellread historin let me (as b.clinton put it) "make some points"

heres the backstory. the soviet union was a communist country. that means they were stupid and didnt get freedom as long as you gave them enough of beet soup ("borsht"), a regional specialty. t hats why we gave them agricultural aid but another story for another day. afghanistan was a tribal country and really the only thing was going on was a bunch of manly peshmerga killing each other for teasing each other and kabul being kind of an okay muslim city (i know i know :)

so anyway we got one of the soviets to turn into an american foreign policy expert - it was basically a terminator 2 situation - the terminator robot we programed to fight for us was zbignognogno brezhsinikiniski, john connor the little ♥♥♥♥♥ boy who needs someone to tell whats what was jimmy carter, sarah connor the only person who understood what was going on was osama bin laden (she loved john connor/jimmy carter back then but a lot of ppl thought she/he was "loko") and the t-1000 that just wrecked ♥♥♥♥ but didn't really think longterm was the stinger missile (hinds were those cops that just every1 killed indiscriminately - but plz remember #bluelivesmatter)

PHEW big metaphor there. so zbignognogno saw a huge oppoutunity when russian invaded afghanistan in 1979. he said "lets pull like a china in vietnam kind of move" to make this "russias vietnam" well it worked - TO WELL. the mujahadeen (muslim for "ghost peppers") were so powerful that after they shot down all the soveits, they started doing crazy ♥♥♥♥ like - this is true - 9/11. to quote jimmy carter "what a boner!"

well in the sense that we crated our own 21st century enemy you could say russia won however i would argue that in fact what happened is america lost, because the USSR has never won NEthing without our help
