In English, gay originally and until the 20th century means "happy, fun". Starting from here, from the 17th century onwards, it was also referred to the joys of social dispersal ("fun-loving, social dispersed") and in this context increasingly associated with a lifestyle considered immoral ("lyrical, debaucherous, promiscuous"). Other older meanings were "brilliant (of people and colors)," "charmant" and, as an adverb, "very". Throughout the 19th century, it meant, specifically by women, "living in prostitution." The modern meaning "homosexual" may have developed the word in the 19th century. In older written documents, however, this cannot always be clearly read out, so that the first clear evidence of "gay" according to the Oxford English Dictionary dates back to 1935. In this sense, the word was first used in particular as a coquettish,moth-encoder or indirect paraphrase for male homosexuality.
