I really liked to see the development of CD Project Red through the witcher games.
Witcher 1 had its issues with the gameplay/mechanics, but the story was already well presented (that the story is good is obvious, if you think the book series is written well). Witcher 3 is one of the best RPGs ever, and I think Witcher 2 has much to do with it, or more the development process of the trilogy.
Because in Witcher 2 they worked on these issues, while maintaining the good story telling. Really smooth gameplay now! If you like the Witcher saga, this is a must play! You can skip Witcher 1 imho, because it really doesnt fit todays standards, but play this one!
