Steam Review for No Rest for the Wicked

Overall Impression
This game is an easy recommend, even before the Breach update. With the update now live, No Rest for the Wicked has become even more polished and engaging.

Presentation & Performance
The art style, setting, voice acting, and soundtrack are incredibly immersive. The visuals have improved noticeably in the Breach update—textures, lighting, and polish all feel more refined.

I’m running a 5700X3D and RTX 3080, and performance is vastly improved since launch. The game doesn’t have in depth graphics options, but at 1080p with DLAA Transformer, I’m getting around 120+ FPS consistently, and it looks sharper than most games at this resolution. I haven’t tested this update on my 4K OLED yet, but it looked stunning when I tried it a few months ago.

Combat & Progression
Combat is difficult, with each enemy posing a significant threat, yet it remains fun and rewarding. Outside of the main story, there are plenty of missions and bounties to complete. The UI for managing bounties and challenges has become more cumbersome in the new update, but the activities themselves are still satisfying.

Town & World Systems
While exploring, you collect resources used to upgrade your gear and the town of Sacrament. Town upgrades progress in real-time, which some players dislike, but I think it makes each improvement feel meaningful and gives you something to look forward to when returning from an adventure.

Another time-based mechanic is the fog of war, which slowly moves back in as you explore other regions. This repopulates older areas with enemies and scaled loot, making revisiting them worthwhile. These systems create an interesting blend between a linear RPG and something more like a live-service game.

Breach Update Thoughts (So Far)
At launch, I would have rated the game a solid 8/10. Since then, with consistent improvements and quality-of-life changes, it was nearing a 9/10 for me even before this update. I haven’t gotten into the new Breach update areas yet—my character isn’t ready—but I’m having a blast replaying the game, uncovering secrets I missed before or that were added in this update.

There’s been a lot of negative feedback around the update. I disagree with most of the criticism, particularly around difficulty and time-gating, though there are some minor changes, such as the bounty/challenge UI, that were a step backwards this update. The developers have already released a hotfix targeting major complaints, but this review reflects my time before that patch.

Final Verdict
An already-great ARPG that’s only getting better. The Breach update has reignited my excitement for the game. I’ll update this review once I finish the new content, but for now, it’s a strong recommendation for anyone who enjoys a challenging, immersive, and unique RPG.

Incredible combat and world design, completely ruined by the worst technical bugs I've ever experienced in a video game. Bought the game to play with friends, only to spend over an hour of the 2.5 hours I've played troubleshooting various issues. The most prevalent is the mouse cursor appearing on screen in game, which also happened to reduce my sensitivity by 3-4 times. Leaving the game and rejoining did not fix, the only way to solve it online involves about 6-7 steps of messing with steam overlay and unplugging and replugging your mouse. Next is getting softlocked in almost any menu randomly, and being unable to hit any button or icon, which is only solved by restarting the game.

I'm not addicted. I can stop whenever I want. I just don't want to stop. It's a love/hate relationship, but no other game has the depth that Destiny has. You can play for as many hours as I have and still have that many more hours to go. It's not a game that you "beat" in that sense, it's just one that you have to be the one to decide when you've had enough. I have not hit that point yet, and hopefully this game continues in one way or another after The Final Shape later this year.
