This is the most beautiful game I've ever played. The world they built is probably inspired by 1900's - 1930's Russia, with distorted inhumane-scale proportions suggesting industrialisation for great abundance while the common folk however lives in deep poverty and great superstition.

It has a quality of writing I've only seen in art-house movies. The acting is phenomenal, there were moments when I forgot I'm watching a game cut-scene rendered in a game engine. The characters, their interactions and their development are written with so much care. They will make you feel their hardships and disenfranchisement with their cruel reality, without unnecessary fanfares and drama (of which trap story-driven games usually fall into so easily).

The game is about two characters coming to terms with their own beliefs and superstitions while the society and their organised religion they live in repeatedly wipes the floor with them. The game goes into truely dark and horrible places with them (rape or untreated frostbite, just to mention two and not spoil too much), but the traumas these characters go through, the way how that's told, are handled with utmost respect.

The more I think about this story the more I can see how nicely it's woven together. There's this phrase of an old Hungarian comedian that "You can have a 2 hour speech, which is dissolved 5 minutes, OR you can have a 5 minutes speech but the weight of it will be 2 hours". The same translates to this game very well. The four hours duration of this story carries its weight for months, while I've played epic 40-60 hours story campaigns which I forgot immediately after finishing them,
