This is the only 'modern' (non-WW2) CM title that I have played, and it is almost like an entirely different game. The strategy required is entirely different--it's almost like the officers then and 'now' read entirely different books, shocking! Not to mention, the lack of a near-peer opponent means that the majority of the focus is on maximizing destruction of the enemy while taking extremely little, to no, casualties whatsoever. Many players find this jarring when switching from either WW2->Modern or Modern->WW2 titles as the focus on unit preservation is entirely different. Losing 20 soldiers in an engagement against Syrian insurgents feels like a true massacre--whereas losing *ONLY* 20 soldiers in Normandy, Italy, or the Eastern Front can be an unimaginably 'bloodless' victory.

This review is looking at the game purely in terms of diversity. The conclusion?
In terms of faction and unit diversity the game certainly, without question, is the best CM WW2 title. This is due to:
1) Longest timeframe.
2) Most faction diversity (incl. Brazilian, Indian, South African, Free French, Italian Partisan units, Germans, Americans, Italians, etc.)
3) Due to the two previous, it naturally has the most varied and wide diversity of units.

I have yet to play most any of the Eastern Front CM WW2 titles, but I do not think that would change the stance of this review regarding unit and faction diversity.

The definitive hex and counter game, for the time being. I grew up on Panzer Corps/General. This game takes the best aspects of that and builds upon them. Something I really love about this game is the focus on combined arms. In many missions, you will be expected to use all the resources available to you--land, sea, and air. The learning curve is not the end of the world, but the game is extremely deep in it's strategy. I would recommend that you try and find a friend who also plays the game, because it can be very nice and helpful to have someone to discuss strategy with.

if you've ever been annoyed by the lack of scale in military rts/strategy games then look no further, because you'll find it here on the battle maps, recreated more meticulously and realistically than I've seen in other games.

once you understand it somewhat its very fun

this game makes me want to stick nine inch nails inside my eyelids.
