10+ years ago, I picked up a bass for the first time, and played the original Rocksmith. I went from struggling to play songs and not understanding how to pluck bass strings, to playing gigs, learning other instruments, and spending far too much money on bass gear.

This 'game' has the potential to take you from someone with zero musical ability whatsoever to someone that can play an instrument incredibly well. If you struggle with the idea of regular practice, this is for you - it does not feel like practice, because you are actively playing along to songs you enjoy. There are literal thousands of user made custom DLCs (CDLCs) available online, for free. It is not an /endless/ resource of songs to play, but I guarantee you'll find songs that you will know and enjoy learning.

Perhaps one of the best ways to really get into an instrument is by finding these songs you enjoy, struggling to play them, then learning the technique and watching yourself get closer and closer to nailing them. The feeling of succeeding at being able to play your favourite song on an instrument is amazing - and Rocksmith is so good for that.

The reason as to why it has worked so well for me is that having notes coming towards the fretboard makes a whole lot more sense than having to scroll through tabs. It is a lot more visual than something like guitar pro. Once you can sight read charts, you no longer need to have your guitar/bass plugged in to play rocksmith. Heck, you don't even need to have the game on steam - just youtube search for '(song name) rocksmith (guitar/bass)' and you can play along to these.

The downsides of RS is that it doesn't teach you technique particularly well, if at all. It is not the be all end all resource for learning guitar/bass. However if you follow other resources online alongside playing songs with RS, you will notice your technique improving considerably. Additionally, I find that RS really doesn't 'teach' you songs - I can't remember any of the basslines that I play, unless I put effort into memorising them. With tabs, you have to learn the song in full, and remember it - not the case with Rocksmith.

Some other negatives - this new version does not have any songs included, but you can download CDLCs for free online (customsforge). If you want to make the most of the features (like the practice/gamemodes/difficulty adjustments & note recognition), you need either an audio interface or the real tone cable. However, the audio in this game is very buggy and specific on the type of device you can use with it, it doesn't seem to like my audio interface.

I would personally try watching some rocksmith charts on youtube prior to purchasing the game - try to play along, see if it works for you. If it does, then buy it - it has almost singlehandedly led me into the world of being a musician and I cannot reccomend it highly enough.

I am studying electrical/electronics engineering at university and this is teaching me more about digital logic, in a practical way, than my actual course.
As an electronics study resource / 'lab' game? It's excellent! However, if you don't understand logic at all, the latter levels are going to be REALLY hard.

It does a decent enough job at explaining how gates work etc but I found it ramps up significantly when you get to certain points.
I find it a lot easier/more approachable vs Zachtronics games, but it does get very hard; you're going to need to do your own research and maybe even get a digital logic/computer architecture textbook.

I wish the game offered 'hints' - solutions are well explained in videos, but not available for every level.
I also wish the campaign utilised the 'delay' and 'gate' scores. With logic, it is very much about optimisation and reducing the number of gates. The campaign doesn't limit you to this, just limits you in a certain amount of space (well, at least, so far!)

It's a feature in the sandbox/component factory, so I'd love to see it implemented into levels as well.
It would be helpful for when you go 'off the rails' - i.e, designing a solution that is far more complicated than it needs to be!

100% worth the price though. It's a pretty good logic sim in itself as well. Can export VHDL etc.

Been waiting for this game for a while, its better than expected! Awesome sound design & music, graphical style is super cool & it's got a good creepy vibe throughout.

If I'd have any criticisms, it'd be the world feels a little empty, some more puzzles would have been nice - it's quite a linear experience and you'll find yourself backtracking to use items you've found etc a la resident evil. It's also rather short, but it's immersive enough that I'm enjoying it thus far. The music and excellent sound design make up for the somewhat barren world!

It's not horror horror, it won't *terrify* you, but the atmosphere is creepy. You can get immersed & feel on the edge of your seat, only if there's nothing *immediately* terrifying near you.

If you enjoy walking simulators & psychological horror, you'll like it. But it's a rather slow game and not for everyone.

However, I'm incredibly happy with my purchase and think it's worth the money, and added bonus of supporting the dev to make some more awesome games!
